There was a major business banquet that night, and Zane had zero desire to attend.

But if he didn't show up, his father would have to.

Lately, his mother had been interrogating him non-stop, so staying in his father's good graces was a matter of survival.

The moment he walked through the doors, he saw her.

She was wearing a dark, off-the-shoulder gown, her long hair swept back into an elegant chignon. She looked sophisticated, radiant, and absolutely breathtaking.

Zane stared at her from across the room, not daring to walk over.

She seemed to sense the shift in the air. Turning her head, her eyes instantly locked onto his.

He didn't move toward her, and she didn't walk toward him. They just stood there, gazing at each other across the crowded room.

How many days had it been? Close to ten.

In that single moment, a searing, overwhelming heat flared between them.

She turned back to her conversation, pretending as if she was entirely unaffected.

He didn't approach her either, focusing on the people demanding his attention.

But neither of them moved from their spots.

He could see her, and she could see him.

Once her business was concluded, Elara offered a polite apology, lifted the hem of her gown, and walked toward the back of the venue. She knew there was a sunroom hidden away, styled like a small garden.

He downed the rest of his drink, gave a graceful nod to the man across from him, and walked out the main doors.

She walked straight through the venue to the back sunroom, while he took the long way around, entering the sunroom from the outside terrace.

She looked up, completely unsurprised to see him standing there.

Zane stared at her. The tidal wave of emotion he had been holding back violently broke loose. He dragged her into his arms.

The banquet raged on in the main hall. They could faintly hear the elegant swell of piano music drifting through the walls.

He couldn't hold back a second longer. His mouth crashed down on hers, crushing her against the wall as he reached out and killed the lights.

The sunroom was entirely made of glass, bursting with vibrant, blooming flowers. With the lights out, their desperate intimacy was safely hidden in the shadows.

His lips dragged against hers, fighting back a ragged gasp. "Why didn't you tell me you were back?"

"I gambled you'd be here tonight. I wanted us to just happen to run into each other."
