Vivian was young, and Elara was deeply worried about her living out on her own.
That evening, Elara summoned her sister home and told her to come back to work at Vance Properties. She figured keeping Vivian busy would stop her from spiraling into her own thoughts—a tactic Elara knew intimately well.
Back when things first exploded with Julian, it was work that had saved her. As stressful as the job was, it was infinitely better than sitting alone and crying.
Vivian agreed. "Elara, I'll go back after the New Year. I want to travel a bit first."
"Getting out of the city is a good idea," Elara said, throwing a subtle shake of her head at their anxious mother.
Once Vivian headed upstairs, Elara turned to Eleanor Barnes. "Mom, she doesn't need life lectures right now. She just needs time to heal and do things she actually enjoys."
"Don't worry too much. She's young. Shedding a few tears is completely normal. Those tears have to fall eventually."
Elara hadn't shed those tears in her youth, and as a result, her thirties had been a catastrophic trainwreck of ruined careers and a shattered marriage.
Eleanor nodded, letting out a heavy sigh before asking, "Why haven't we seen the Whitaker boy around lately?"
Zane had practically begged to come over for dinner multiple times, but Elara flatly refused to let him.
She wasn't officially divorced yet. Having him waltz into her family home like he owned the place felt incredibly inappropriate.
"He's been really busy," Elara said vaguely.
Hearing this, Eleanor looked surprised, but a glimmer of relief shone in her eyes.
"Elara, don't overthink things. Even though your divorce with Julian isn't finalized, any chance of you two staying together is dead and gone."
"You aren't a kid anymore. You don't need to chain yourself to what polite society thinks. Living a happy, practical life is the only thing that matters."
