She was busy playing hostess, and he had his own agenda.

Elara left the courtyard first. To avoid drawing unwanted attention, Zane deliberately stayed behind.

For the next several days, their schedules clashed, and he couldn't find a single opportunity to see Elara.

He did, however, bump into Jocelyn Yale at the Grant estate.

Grandma Grant permanently resided at her sprawling suburban property.

She was a legendary figure in the city's high society.

Of her two sons, the eldest controlled a massive business empire, while the second had chosen the military.

Her second son, Col. Grant, was a highly respected officer, and Zane made it a point to visit the matriarch every year.

Jocelyn's younger sister, Jacqueline Yale, was married to Harrison Grant, the eldest grandson. So, it made perfect sense for Jocelyn to be there.

Fearing another brutal verbal lashing, Zane actively avoided her. If he had known she'd be here, he would have delayed his visit until tomorrow.

Grandma Grant insisted he stay for lunch.

Because Jocelyn was sitting at the table, Zane desperately wanted to politely decline.

But with both of the Grant family's top power brokers present, it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up. Plus, he needed to have a private word with Gideon.

Miraculously, Jocelyn didn't throw a single insult his way throughout the meal.

Zane was completely bewildered. Why was she suddenly being so tolerant?

He stole a cautious glance at her, only to be caught red-handed.

Unable to contain his curiosity, he finally asked, "What's going on with you lately? Did your company hit a rough patch?"

Jocelyn raised an eyebrow. "It's the New Year, and that's the best conversation starter you can come up with?"

"I'm just wondering why your temper has miraculously improved," Zane replied.

Jocelyn simply turned her head, completely ignoring him.

No matter how perfect he was, if there was no future between them, she refused to waste another ounce of her energy on him.

Everything a person did had to have meaning.

She was done chasing a beautiful illusion.

Zane had no other plans for the afternoon. He tried calling Elara, but she was buried in work and didn't have time to entertain him.
