Elara sighed, “The enemy not only refuses to surrender but has the audacity to launch an offensive. Mr. Sterling didn’t just refuse to help; he actively berated me.”

Seeing that she still had the spirit to joke, Zane said, “I’ll contact the banks. I’ll sign the paperwork and act as your guarantor.”

Elara froze. How could she possibly accept such a massive favor from him? “Mr. Whitaker, I—”

“No need to be polite, and no need to thank me. We’re in the same trench,” Zane interrupted. “I’ll give you an answer within three days. If no bank is willing to approve the loan, I’ll find a way to get the money for you myself.”

Elara’s eyes instantly reddened.

A man’s charm might lie in his appearance, his eloquence, or his family background, but at Elara’s age, true charm was defined solely by the ability to solve problems.

The slight alumni connection she shared with Zane didn't warrant him taking such an enormous risk for her.

Elara wasn’t made of stone. Suppressing the overwhelming surge of emotion in her chest, she said, “Mr. Whitaker, if there is ever anything you need—anything I have, or anything I can possibly do—just name it.”

A smile played on Zane’s lips. “I really don’t have anything right now, but I’ll let you know when I do.”

“I mean it,” Elara said earnestly.

After dropping Elara off at the Vance family estate, Zane started making calls to bank presidents he knew while on his way to his dinner engagement.

And then, amidst Jasper Yale’s relentless complaining, Zane spent the next three days drinking heavily at various networking dinners.

Jasper had to chauffeur Zane every day and take care of him when he was drunk.

Zane’s apartment didn’t even have a spare pair of slippers. Jasper was furious: “You backup man! You do all these good deeds, but you never actually tell her!”

“You don’t say a single damn word! Tomorrow, Julian Sterling could say two sweet things to her, and the married couple will be deeply in love again. What will you do then?”

“If you have this much sacrificial spirit, why couldn’t you just coax my sister properly?”

“I seriously suspect someone put a hex on you—if you don’t love Mrs. Sterling, you’ll be poisoned and drop dead immediately!”

After Jasper finished cleaning up after Zane, he prepared to sleep in the guest bedroom.

Suddenly, a half-conscious Zane called out to him: “You are not... allowed to sleep in the guest room...”

“Why not?!” Jasper flared up like an angry cat.
