“I can’t believe you guys thought it was a good idea to drive instead of flying,” I grumbled as we stopped at the fourth gas station in the last two hours because Drew had to go the bathroom
again.
“Well, we thought it would be fun to take a road trip with the whole family,” Adam said as we waited outside the bathroom door for Andrew, Chance, and Waylen. I have a feeling they’re in there making trouble. I can feel it. “That’s why we left Saturday,” Adam continued. “Thought we could split the drive between two days. Didn’t think a little over 19 hours was bad.”
“And now?” I asked with a raised brow.
“I just keep picturing going through the airport with these three,” he said, pointing his thumb at the closed door. “You think they’re wild in the car… A plane ride would have been shorter, but would it
have been less hectic?”
I guess he has a point. The boys are usually well–behaved, but when they get together… not so much. They just get too wild, too many bad ideas. I could only imagine the craziness at an airport. Not to mention on the plane. And there would be other people to complain about it too. Which would inevitably end in a fight because I can’t control my anger when it comes to my son, and
Adam is just as bad.
Adam might not be part of an MC, but he’s still an intimidating man. He’s huge; the same height as me but with way more muscle. He looks scary, but he’s got a heart of gold. I’ve asked him to prospect for the club numerous times since he started dating my older sister, but he always refused. Said the life didn’t appeal to him. Not because of the bro.therhood we share, but because
of the club bunnies and runs he’d have to go on.
My brother–in–law is undeniably faithful to my sister You should see the way he means–mugs other girls when they even get close. I seriously doubt that any club bunny could seduce him. I think he’s more worried about losing it and hitting a woman than cheating on my sister. Plus, he hates being away from his family. A lot of our runs take days, and all members go on runs if that’s what War wants. Those of us who have other jobs rarely go on them though.
Plus, Adam has a really good job. He’s a project engineer and makes bank. My sister is able to be a stay–at–home mother. They live in a big house too, and their kids never want for anything. I’m happy he’s happy with his life, but sometimes I wish he would have taken me up on prospecting. My
sister would be closer. Way would have friends around.
“I’m glad you guys decided to come,” Adam said, pulling me from my thoughts. “Glad you weren’t

gonna really punish Waylen.”
I sighed heavily.
“I can’t just let him think his little pranks are okay,” I replied.

“I think his little pranks are justified,” he grunted. “Maybe these grown a.ss women should learn
how to act accordingly. Ya know, stop trying to use a kid to get to his dad.”
“I know he’s just trying to make sure we don’t end up with another Glory, but he also needs to
understand that I can handle it myself. He’s just a kid and shouldn’t be worrying about that sh.it.” I
said. “Plus, him constantly disappearing on me… that can’t keep happening.”
Adam turned his head and smirked at me.
“Ya know, your ma tells your sister everything, and in turn, she tells me everything,” he said, and I
braced myself for what was coming next. “I know all about Waylen and the plant girl.” I rolled
my eyes. “Birdie also told me all about your… past with that girl.”
“There is no past with her,” I muttered, looking away from him.
“That’s not how I heard it,” he replied, amused. “As a matter of fact, I heard she’s the whole reason
they started calling you Jinx.”
I shot him a glare.
“It’s not like that,” I said. “It was just… a series of unfortunate events.”
Adam snorted at that.
“That lasted years?” he asked.
I shot him a glare.
“Okay, I can see it irritates you,” he said. “But let me just ask one question.”
Just then, the boys ran out of the bathroom, immediately asking for snacks and drinks. Of course, we said yes, and they wasted no time running towards the coolers.
“Why haven’t you asked her out yet?” Adam said quietly enough that the boys didn’t hear. “All these years later and you never-”
“Why would I ask her out?” I cut him off. “I’m a biker and she’s… Deidra Hartman, the town’s angel. Besides, I don’t date. Deidra’s the type you settle down with. I’m not settlin‘.”
“Hmmm, something tells me that with her… it wouldn’t be settling for you,” he replied.
I shot him a look.
“The f***k you trying to say?” I asked. “She’s just a chick. We barely even know each other.”

“Once again, you forget that your sister tells me everything,” he said, giving me a smug smile. “And I mean everything.”
I narrowed my eyes at him, trying to gauge how much he actually knows. Probably everything. Birdie’s kept my secrets from everyone for years, but I doubt she would keep anything from her husband. Especially with the way Waylen acts with Deidra. She and Mom have both been hinting at me asking Deidra out for years. Even though Deidra was in a relationship. Everyone’s starting to seem a little bit obsessed with me and her lately top. Probably because she’s newly single and everyone thinks this is my chance.
“Look, I’m just wondering,” Adam said. “Genuinely. I mean, I’ve met the girl when we came to visit. She’s… real. Which is hard as hell to find these days She’s kind, but doesn’t take sh.it from anyone, not even you or the club. Yet, she’s also respectful too. Not to mention the way Waylen talks about her. And did you ever see the two of them together?”
I swallowed the lump forming in my throat.
“Yeah, I have,” I replied quietly.
Which is true. I’ve seen the way they both light up around each other. During small moments too. I’d never seen Waylen look happier than when he’s around her. And Deidra… the way she smiles at Waylen. I’d never seen that smile before. It was brand new, and completely for Waylen. My son. I wasn’t jealous or envious. It was something else entirely that I feel when I see them together. And I can’t fu.cking stand it.
“How can you not want to hold her down after seeing that?” Adam asked, and he sounded so genuine that I felt I had to give him an actual answer.
“It just… It was just never the right time,” I mumbled. “And Thorn hates me anyway, so it don’t matter. I’m only 26, I’m not ready to settle down yet She’d rather settle down with a cactus than ever even consider touching me. So, it really doesnt matter. Besides,” I added. “I’m supposed to bank everything on a fleeting feeling I get when I see the way my son lights up around her? This ain’t some fairy–tale. This is real life. And in real life, her and I don’t work out.”
Adam looked at me for a moment. And for just a moment there, I thought he was going to leave it alone. I’d already overshared, given more than I wanted to. Everything I said was the truth, but it didn’t matter. Deidra and I weren’t meant to be. I already knew that, already put it to rest, and already moved on.
“No one said you had to marry her,” Adam said as we walked to the cash register. “I just think you should ask her out. Go for it. Most she can do is say no, right?”
Or laugh in my face and tell the entire club how she rejected me.
“She’s single again, I heard,” Adam continued. “Just sayin‘, now’s your chance.”

I shook my head as we walked out of the gas station.
“Let’s just focus on this trip,” I replied.

Thankfully, Adam dropped it. His words haunted me though. I’ve already been thinking nonstop that Deidra is finally single again. But I know how that story turns out, and I’m not interested.
Deidra don’t like me anyway.
Well, by the time we arrived at the cabin, it was sometime in the evening. Birdie and Mom rushed the kids inside while the rest of us grabbed all the suitcases out of the two cages we rented to drive here. When I walked inside, the kids were exploring the house still. Waylen was more excited than I’d seen in months, and it made me happy that mom talked us into coming.
The three boys were sharing one room that had two sets of bunk beds. Mom and Dad had their own room, Birdie and Adam were sharing with baby Rosie, and I had my own room too. It was nice, cozy. The whole cabin was really nice. The decorations were simple, a big contrast to the fu.cking clubhouse back home. It was all elegant, and I couldn’t help but feel slightly out of place.
I have to admit that this place was pretty nice. Not what we were used to, but cute. For a brief moment, I thought about how much Deidra would like it here. I quickly shook the thought away though, blaming everyone else who’d been constantly bringing her up for the intrusive thought.
“Dad!!” Waylen shouted as he ran into my room and wrapped his arms around my legs. “Dad, can we go outside and build a snowman?? Pleeeaassseee? Aunt Birdie and Uncle Adam are coming out and even Granny and Grandpa too!” he rambled excitedly.
“Of course, buddy,” I replied, ruffling his hair. “Go get your snow–pants on.”
I just need to stay focused on his trip and my son. He’s what matters most.
