Chapter 57: The Special Gift
Jinx’s P.O.V.
“You give it to her yet?” Adam asked me, low enough that only I could hear.
My eyes were on my girl. She was on the floor amongst the huge mess of toys and wrapping paper. She and Waylen were putting together some robot thing that she got him that he just loves. More than the fu.cking Nintendo Switch I got him. The kids opened all their gifts, but the adults haven’t. We decided to do it after the kids. They just finished and Dad is working on getting the boys to pick up the wrapping paper. Mom’s in the kitchen making a huge feast as usual. Birdie is helping the boys make an even bigger mess. And Adam and I were watching the whole thing unfold.
“No, I haven’t given it to her yet, and I don’t know if I want to,” I grumbled, not taking my eyes off my girl and my kid.
God, Deidra is so damn beautiful. Is it crazy that I think she’s even prettier after last night? Man, I’m in serious trouble here. I think I fu.cking love her already. And the best part… I don’t even care. I’m not scared at all. Not even a little bit. I know Deidra is freaked out, and part of me thinks that she still might run away, but that’s okay. I’ll chase her for the rest of our lives if I have to. I don’t mind throwing her over my shoulder and reminding her exactly why we’re so good together whenever I have to.
Honestly, I want to bask in this feeling. I want to be completely wrapped up in Deidra and never let go. I want her more than I’ve ever wanted anything And now it’s… real. It’s actually fu.cking real. She’s actually fu.cking mine.
“Why not?” Adam asked. “You gonna just give her nothing? Especially when there’s such a large gift for you from her sitting under the tre
right now?”
Sh.it, he’s right. Deidra… that little sneak. I was with her when she did all her shopping. I know she didn’t get anything for me that day. I didn’t expect anything at all. But there’s a present under the tree with my name on it. It looks professionally wrapped too. She must have called it in or asked Emma for help.
Which makes me feel even worse about what I got her.
I saw it in a window while I was in town with Adam the day Deidra and I decided to start fake-dating. A pretty little necklace with diamonds and little red roses that have diamond thorns. It’s not long either, but it won’t fit her like a collar or anything. The moment I saw it I knew it would look fu.cking stunning on my girl. I had planned to get her to spend Christmas with us from the get-go and I knew I needed a present. It feels so… minuscule though. It’s not as expensive as it looks, not that Deidra would be able to tell. But I wish I could have gotten her something more thoughtful. Like a house full of plants. Or that one monstera plant she’s been wanting.
How do I know that? She told Waylen. Apparently, it’s a rare houseplant that Deidra has been wanting to get. I guess she was too busy between Garden Sip and planning her stupid wedding. She told Waylen that by the time she could place an order for one, they were on back-order. Now
she was on some kind of wait-list.
Thinking of that… I pulled my phone out to check my texts. I’ve been texting Cutter all day, trying to make up for my sh.itty gift already. He’s annoyed as all hell with me, but I don’t care.
Cutter: Dude, its Christmas. Just enjoy your day with her for fu.ck’s sake.
Me: Tell me you got the plant.
Cutter: Jesus fu.ck! Are all y’all finna be like this when you settle down?
Me: I need some kind of good news man. Please.
Cutter: No luck on the plant yet, but I’m working on it, okay?
Cutter: War’s ma is working on her cut though. It’ll be done when y’all get back. Honey is thrilled about the welcoming party. Just relax in the meantime, bro. I got you.
Me: I owe you. When you finally meet your girl, I’ll help you out. We all know you’ll need it.
Cutter: If I ever say some dumb sh.it like, “I found the one”, bash my head into the fu.cking wall.
I chuckled as I pocketed my phone again. Adam was still standing next to me, eyeing me up. I
refused to acknowledge him. Love my brother-in-law, but he’s just as irritating as his wife.
“I don’t get why you’re so worried about it,” he finally said. “It’s a gorgeous necklace. Deidra isn’t high maintenance. She’s gonna love it.”
I shook my head at him. He doesn’t get it.
“Deidra isn’t high maintenance, but she deserves something more thoughtful than this,” I told him. “She’s not a jewelry-wearing kinda girl, ya know?”
“Okay, I get it,” he replied. “I still think she’s going to love it though.”
“Well, I’m making up for it when we get home either way,” I said. “But I hope she does too.”
“Alright, kids, go play with your new toys while the adults open their gifts!” Mom called out as she clapped her hands. “Come on, you guys, let’s do this before dinner gets done. Come sit,” she waved us over as she sat on the couch. Dad sat next to her. Birdie and Adam sat on the loveseat. I plopped down on the floor behind Deidra, pulling her between my legs.
“I’m so happy that Waylen likes his gift,” she whispered to me as she watched him play on the other side of the room with his cousins. He was showing Rosie how the remote control for his robot worked.
“Can I give you my gift first?” I asked, whispering into her ear.
Deidra’s head whipped around so that she could give me an apprehensive look.
“You got me something?” she asked, shocked.
“Of course I did,” I replied with a laugh. “It was last-minute and… not would I would have gotten you had I known this was going to happen, but of course I got you something, Wisteria.”
Deidra sniffled and, much to my surprise, answered me.
“Roy and Mary 8/18/97,” she said.
Roy and Mary…?
“Aren’t those… your parents’ names?” I asked, feeling shocked as all hell.
“I remember when my mom lost this,” she said, her voice so soft I almost missed it. “She was devastated. I don’t think she ever even realized that she lost it here…”
“Wait a second… are you telling me that… That this necklace used to belong to your mom?” I
asked.
Deidra nodded and sniffled again.
“My dad gave it to her when I was a baby,” she told me. “She wore it every chance she could. She loved it. He talked about adding my initial to it on the last rose too. But then Mom lost it…” Then she turned her head to look at me. “But you found it. You found it and thought of me and bought it, and you didn’t even realize what it was.”
“I…” I trailed off, unsure of what to say. I wasn’t sure if she was angry with me or just shocked. I had
no idea how to handle something like this.
“She loved roses,” she continued. “They were her favorite. Dad and I used to plant them in the front yard every year just for her. He used to call us his Rose and little Rosebud.”
“Oh Petal,” I mumbled, wiping a tear from her eye before it could fall. “I had no idea. I’m-”
“Thank you,” she cut me off, sniffling again. “Thank you so much, Brixton. You have no idea how much this means to me. Even if you didn’t know.”
And to think I thought it was a sh.it gift.
“Do you want to wear it?” I asked gently.
Deidra nodded and turned her head. She gave me the necklace and moved her hair out of the way. I clasped it around her neck before pressing my lips to her covered shoulder. I was nervous as hell that I had completely ruined her mood, but then she spun around to face me. She gave me a huge smile as she grabbed my face. Then she planted those juicy lips against mine in a soul-crushing kiss.
“Okay,” she said after she pulled away. “Your turn.”
