Chapter 107

“Oh, right! I almost forgot,” Deanna says hastily. “Your grandmother is returning the day after tomorrow. Everyone needs to watch what they say. She has no idea about all the chaos that has happened over the last few months.”

“Don’t worry, Mom. We won’t let Grandma find out,” Jade replies with sickening sweetness

Due to her fragile health, Eleanor spends most of her time at a remote mountain temple, praying and eating vegetarian meals. She rarely comes down from the mountain, leaving her care in the hands of her loyal attendant, Marian. The only reason she is returning now is for her upcoming eightieth birthday, which the family plans to celebrate with a massive gala.

Charles personally called her a few days ago, practically begging her to come stay at the estate for a while. Because of her age, they tend to shield her from the family’s messier scandals, planning to keep her in the dark about the recent drama.

“We might keep our mouths shut, but who knows if that little bitch will run to Grandma and start whining?” Alec mutters darkly. “If she says something she shouldn’t…”

His father scoffs coldly. “She wouldn’t dare! The old lady cares about this family’s reputation more than anything. If she finds out Tara caused all these scandals, she’ll be the first one to tear her apart!”

“Don’t worry, Mom, Dad,” Jade says, playing the perfect daughter. “Grandma has always adored me. I’ll make sure to keep her happy and distracted.”

“Exactly,” Jake sneers. “With Jade around, Grandma won’t even spare a glance at her.”

Nikolai nods in agreement. “Yeah, Grandma hates people who lack manners. Someone with Tara’s attitude could never win her favor.”

“Do you really think your grandmother is that easy to fool?” their father warns. “She survived decades in the corporate world; there isn’t a trick she hasn’t seen. Just keep your heads down and behave.”

Turning to Jake, he orders, “Call your aunt and Tara. Tell them your grandmother is coming home.”

The elderly always want the whole family gathered together. Even though Tara cut ties with them, they still have to put on a convincing show for Eleanor.

“Understood, Dad. I’ll make the calls,” Jake says.

That evening, both Kellen and Tara receive the news of Eleanor’s return.

Tara’s lips twitch into a faint, cynical smile. Ever since grandfather left all his corporate shares to Tara, Eleanor has held a deep grudge against her. It infuriates Eleanor that out of all the legitimate sons and grandsons, the inheritance went to a young girl. But it was her

late husband’s absolute final will, so there was nothing she could do to change it

Because of that bitterness, Eleanor always glares at Tara with an icy expression, lacing her words with thinly veiled disdain. Tara knows perfectly well that her grandmother’s return won’t bring her any warm welcomes.

But frankly, she couldn’t care less. If her own flesh-and-blood parents treat her like garbage, why should she expect anything different from anyone else?

Holding her phone, Kellen frowns. “Tara, what are you going to do? Are you going back to the estate?”

“Of course I am,” Tara says smoothly. “It’s my grandmother’s eightieth birthday. How could a devoted granddaughter miss it? Besides… I really want to see just how spectacular their little theatrical performance is going to be.”

Kellen sighs and gently pats her shoulder. “I’ll be right there with you. Just remember, your grandmother is getting older and sometimes she says things she doesn’t mean. Try not to

take it to heart.”

Eleanor’s stubbornness has always been a massive headache for Kellen. She has tried reasoning with her mother countless times, but Eleanor always insists on doing things her way. What worries Kellen most is that if Eleanor finds out about the divorce, she will absolutely throw a fit.
