Chapter 112

With no other option, Jade braces herself and returns to face the music. Standing in the center of the sprawling living room, she twists the hem of her shirt, her eyes red and puffy. “Grandma… I am sorry,” she whispers, her voice barely audible.

Eleanor stares her down, her gaze like a blade. “Why are you apologizing?”

Tears spill down Jade’s cheeks. “I… I shouldn’t have faked the fall to frame my sister.”

Deanna’s heart aches at the sight. She steps forward to comfort her, but Charles holds her back.

“I was just so terrified,” Jade sobs uncontrollably. “Tara is the biological daughter of the Dennis family. I’m just adopted. I was so scared you all would stop loving me, but I already consider you my real family! Grandma, I’m sorry! I was too selfish. Punish me… I will never do it again!”

With a dramatic sob, Jade collapses to the floor, burying her face in her hands as she weeps hysterically, creating a scene of absolute devastation. The rest of the family watches, their expressions softening with sympathy.

Tara lets out a quiet scoff. Jade really knows exactly how to play this family. Her pathetic, innocent act is executed to perfection. Even Eleanor’s eyes flash with a momentary reluctance to punish her. Her earlier shouting was just to establish authority, but seeing Jade so distraught softens her resolve.

Reading the room, Tara speaks up with calculated grace. “Grandma, since she already knows she made a mistake, why not give her a chance to reflect?”

Everyone turns to Tara in shock. Jade snaps her head up, her tear-filled eyes darting with suspicion. Why would Tara help her? She must be plotting something worse.

Eleanor pauses. “Tara, what do you suggest?”

“Ultimately, she is just letting her insecurities get the best of her,” Tara says smoothly, a hidden gleam in her eyes. “Why doesn’t she spend the next day in the estate’s private chapel? Copying some scriptures in the quiet will help her find some inner peace.”

Tara is purposely giving Eleanor a graceful way out. It is obvious the old woman still has a soft spot for her adopted granddaughter.

Eleanor nods approvingly. “That is an excellent idea. The chapel is peaceful. It will do her good.”

Jade’s face turns ghostly pale. The estate’s chapel is notoriously drafty, cold, and utterly isolating. Spending a day in there is pure torture. But she has no choice but to accept.

“Thank you, Grandma. I will focus on my writing and pray for your long life and health,” Jade
