Chapter 113
Chapter 113
Time flies, and the day of Eleanor’s eightieth birthday banquet arrives. The Dennis family estate is brilliantly illuminated, buzzing with high-society guests. As a prestigious dynasty in Capital City, and with Eleanor known as a legendary powerhouse in the business world, the city’s elite arrive in droves, bearing lavish gifts.
Eleanor sits at the head of the grand hall, wearing a striking crimson dress. Her silver hair is elegantly styled, and around her neck rests a priceless diamond necklace passed down through generations. Even at eighty, her eyes remain sharp, exuding the same commanding presence she held in her youth.
She greets the endless stream of well-wishers with a warm smile, while the rest of the Dennis family mingles with the crowd.
Tara stands gracefully in a pearl-white dress embroidered with silver motifs. With only a simple jade hairpin adorning her hair, she looks effortlessly radiant amidst the sea of heavy jewelry and extravagant gowns.
After her miserable stint in the chapel, Jade is finally allowed out for the banquet. True to form, she wears an overly flashy pink dress, layered with ostentatious diamonds that scream new money, desperately trying to prove her status.
When the Jewell family arrives, Jade eagerly rushes to welcome them, acting as if she is already Evan’s fiancée. Considering the social circles are small, everyone is well aware of the intended alliance between the two families.
Tara remains completely unfazed, treating the Jewell family as if they are invisible.
As the hall fills, Deanna carefully logs all the extravagant gifts into a registry, knowing these high-society favors will eventually need to be returned.
Stepping into the spotlight, Jade smiles sweetly. “Grandma, I wish you a happy and long life.”
“Thank you, my sweet girl,” Eleanor beams, thoroughly enjoying the festive atmosphere.
“Grandma, I prepared something very special for you,” Jade says, holding up an exquisite sandalwood box.
“You always are so thoughtful,” Eleanor nods.
Shooting Tara a smug look, Jade slowly opens the lid. Inside rests the Madonna, a breathtaking statue of flawless quality. The intricate carving catches the chandelier light, radiating a brilliant glow.
“I had this specially brought in from overseas,” Jade explains proudly. “And I had it blessed by a renowned master to ensure your health and happiness.” She knows Eleanor favors spiritual and traditional artifacts, so she has been preparing this masterstroke for months to win back favor.
