The brutal clarity of the situation hits Evan like a freight train, leaving him feeling utterly gutted.
"Tara, let's go. We are wasting our time," Lucinda says nervously. Taking in Evan's bloodshot eyes and furious expression, she is genuinely worried the man might snap and start breaking things. She grabs Tara's arm and pulls her toward the front to settle the bill. "We can eat somewhere else." She doesn't care about abandoning the expensive meal; she just wants to get away from these lunatics.
Tara doesn't argue. She already got her entertainment for the day, and Evan looks like he is on the verge of a stroke. The mission is accomplished.
Evan sits frozen, watching them walk out the door. He desperately wants to chase after Tara and beg, but his fragile pride firmly glues him to his seat.
Jake finally stops laughing. Wiping a tear from his eye, he pats Evan's shoulder with mock sympathy. "Pull yourself together. Just give it some time and try to win her back later."
Jake is fully supportive of Evan's delusional quest. For one, he desperately needs a comrade in the trenches while he tries to win Lucinda back. Misery loves company. More importantly, Jake refuses to watch Jade successfully join the Jewell family. Jade ruined his biological sister's life to secure that engagement; he isn't about to let the manipulative psycho get her happy ending.
"Do you really think I have a chance?" Evan asks, eyeing Jake suspiciously. He has a feeling his old friend isn't entirely operating out of the goodness of his heart.
