Chapter 45

‘Don’t be ridiculous. She’s my private doctor,” Danny replies sharply, his protective streak undeniably clear.

‘Your private doctor? You mean she’s treating your illness?” the man asks, his voice spiking in disbelief.

‘Yes. The cold toxins in my system are almost entirely gone. I’m doing much better,” Danny says calmly. He originally planned to wait until he was fully cured to tell his best friend, but since the topic came up, he sees no harm in sharing it.

Inside the room, the man sounds incredibly skeptical. “Seriously? Danny, the’ entire medical team on the Calhoun family payroll couldn’t do a damn thing, and some young girl fixed it? Are you sure she isn’t…”

‘Luke,” Danny’s voice drops to a freezing temperature. “Say one more word, and you’ll be managing the desert mines by tomorrow morning.”

‘Whoa, okay, okay! I’m shutting up!” Luke quickly surrenders. Then, owering his voice, he adds, “But your uncle has been making moves ately. Even your grandfather is spooked. They might already know about his girl.”

‘She doesn’t need to be dragged into this. Keep my treatment a secret for now,” Danny warns, tapping his knuckles against the table. “Besides, she has enough to deal with thanks to the parasites in the Dennis family.”

‘Danny, you’re finally blooming late in life! But hey, you have to enjoy it while it lasts. You aren’t getting any younger. If you stay single much longer, people are going to start wondering about us. Your grandpa has already called me twice about it.”

“Get lost. I’m perfectly straight. And you’re a total playboy who changes girlfriends every week. Who would ever suspect you?” Danny scoffs.

“Hey, no personal attacks! I take all my relationships very seriously,” Luke

protests, ignoring the fact that his turnover rate is dizzyingly high. He just met a cute, sweet-talking model, and Danny simply doesn’t understand the appeal.

Outside the door, Tara lets out a soft laugh and knocks gently. The room falls dead silent. The door swings open, revealing Danny. The harsh lines of his face instantly soften the moment he sees her. “Hey.”

‘Yeah, traffic was awful. Sorry I’m late,” Tara says casually.

She is dressed comfortably today in a simple white silk shirt and high-waisted jeans that accentuate her slender waist and long legs. She radiates an effortless, striking beauty.

Tara’s gaze drifts past Danny, landing on the young man in the room. He s staring at her with unabashed curiosity. He looks to be in his late wenties, carrying a dangerous, playboy charm.

‘Danny, this is your private doctor? Are you sure you didn’t kidnap an A-lister from a film festival?” Luke exaggerates wildly.

Danny shoots him a deadly glare. “Why are you still here?”

‘Don’t be so cold.” Luke steps forward, enthusiastically reaching for Tara’s hand. “Let me introduce myself. I’m Danny’s best buddy and absolute worst influence, Luke!”

Tara nods politely. “Nice to meet you. I’m Tarà.”

_uke leans in, lowering his voice conspiratorially. “Tara, you have no idea. This guy is usually a total ice block. You’re the first woman he’s ever invited to dinner.”

Danny gives him an icy side-eye. “You talk too much.”
