Chapter 51

Chapter 51

At his words, Jade’s radiant complexion drains of color. Her fingers twist nervously into the hem of her shirt. “Jake, why are you bringing this up so suddenly? Tara… she just slipped and fell.”

Jake stares at her shifting, evasive gaze, a sudden weight dropping in his chest. He knows Jade too well. He suddenly grabs her wrist. “Tell me the truth!”

“Ah!” Jade cries out, tears instantly welling in her eyes. “Jake… you’re hurting me!”

He looks down at her, his expression turning frighteningly cold. “You… you actually did it.”

Jade crumples to the floor, breaking into a sob. “Jake, I didn’t mean to! I was just so scared… I was terrified she was going to take everything away from me.”

Jake looks at her with profound disappointment. “Do you have any idea that this is a crime? You could go to prison for this!”

“It was just the two of us out there. If she had any proof, she would have shown it by now,” Jade replies, a hint of reckless confidence bleeding through her tears. The only reason she dared to pull such a stunt was because she thought no one was watching.

“You’re far too impulsive. Tara isn’t going to just let this go,” Jake says, his emotions entirely conflicted. In his mind, Jade has always been a little spoiled and willful, but fundamentally kind-hearted. He never expected her to do something so vicious. Tara holds grudges. When she retaliates, Jade won’t stand a chance against her.

“Jake, the most pressing issue right now is fixing the company,” Jade says, anxiously changing the subject so he won’t dwell on her maliciousness.

“I know,” Jake sighs, rubbing his temples in frustration.

After Wyatt’s scandal blew up the headlines, everyone in the industry now knows an artist from Jake’s agency is involved. The fallout is inevitably dragging down the rest of his talent roster. Ever since Jade returned from filming The Elite Circle, audiences have been actively boycotting her, and brands are dropping her endorsements left and right. Tara’s value, on the other hand, was skyrocketing before this mess derailed everything. It is enough to give him a migraine.

Just as expected, Jake spends the afternoon calling various directors and producers, only to be met with polite excuses and rejections. His agency is being quietly blacklisted by industry insiders. Jake blames it all on Tara. The Dennis family utterly despises her now, yet they are completely helpless to stop her. They originally planned to use her contract to leash her, but with the recent scandal, no one dares to book her for jobs anyway.

Because of this, Tara’s days are unexpectedly peaceful.

One afternoon, she gets a call from Bianca. Since filming the reality show, the two friends

haven’t had a chance to catch up.

“You heartless girl, Bianca complains, feigning outrage. “You get back from your shoot and don’t even call me? Do you even know what day it is?”

“I’ve been busy taking out the baddies, Tara laughs. “I was actually just about to call you it’s your birthday I already have your present ready. Let’s meet up.”

“Seriously? That’s amazing!” Bianca cheers through the speaker. ‘Let’s do something wild tonight. I booked a booth at The Velvet Lounge. Dress to kill, ’cause we are going out to see the world and make that jerk Evan regret every life choice he’s ever made!”
