The Scorned Heiress: No More Mercy novel Chapter 58

Chapter 58

“Exactly, Dad,” Jake jumps in. “I heard Professor Maxwell at the city hospital is a leading expert in this field. We can use our connections to bring him in as Aunt Kellen’s lead surgeon.”

“Yes!” Jade adds, her eyes gleaming maliciously as she zeroes in on the real prize. “And if we’re the ones providing the life-saving doctor, we can use it as leverage to force Tara to hand over her company shares!”

Charles narrows his eyes, a cold, calculating smile spreading across his face. You’re right. I’ll contact Kellen immediately and convince her to return for treatment.”

His wife hesitates. “But what about the Rhodes family?”

“The Rhodes family?” Charles sneers. “If it weren’t for the Dennis family’s influence all those years ago, they wouldn’t have the status they do today. How dare they hide my sister’s illness from me?”

Within days, Aunt Kellen agrees to fly back for treatment. She was already considering it; the tumor is pressing against critical nerves, and her prognosis is incredibly grim. Her overseas specialists admitted they had very little confidence in a successful operation. Kellen wants to try her luck back home, knowing that if the worst happens, she can at least die in her home country.

More than anything, she wants to see Tara. They usually talk all the time, but Tara only ever shares good news. Because of her declining health, Kellen hasn’t been able to call much lately. She worries Tara might already be suspicious.

And Kellen is right. Tara has had a sinking feeling in her chest for weeks. Every time she tries to call her aunt, she can’t reach her, or gets a brief text saying she is too busy. No matter how busy someone is, they always have a few minutes for a phone call. Tara knows Kellen; her aunt is definitely hiding something to keep her from worrying.

One morning, Tara wakes up to several missed calls. Most are from the Dennis family, but one is from Aunt Kellen.

Tara’s heart skips a beat. She immediately dials her aunt’s number.

The line picks up instantly, but instead of her aunt’s warm tone, Charles’s harsh voice barks through the speaker. “Tara, do you have any conscience left in you?”

Tara’s eyes ice over. “Don’t worry about my conscience. I have one. Whether you do is another story entirely. Now, why do you have my aunt’s phone?”

Charles’s blood boils, but he forces down his rage. “Your aunt is lying in a hospital bed and you don’t even care if she lives or dies? After everything she’s done for you!”

Tara’s grip on her phone tightens until her knuckles turn white. “What happened to Aunt

Kellen?”

“What happened? She has a brain tumor. It’s bad. If you have a shred of humanity left, get to Mercy Medical Center right now. Otherwise, you won’t even get to say goodbye.”

“…I’m on my way.”
