Chapter 64

Chapter 64

“Dr. T left as soon as the surgery was over. The procedure was a success. Sorry to disappoint you, but your little scheme failed,” Tara announces, stepping out in her regular clothes.

She has no intention of exposing her identity just yet. God only knows what kind of twisted drama the Dennis family would cook up if they found out.

Jake scoffs. “There is no Dr. T. You’re just making all of this up to-”

“What? Are you upset?” Tara’s lips curl into a cold smirk. “Upset that you couldn’t use Aunt Kellen’s life to blackmail me?”

The family goes pale. Tara ignores them, turning on her heel and heading straight for the ICU. Through the glass window, she watches her aunt sleeping peacefully, the monitor displaying a strong, steady rhythm.

With their leverage gone, the Dennis family has no choice but to awkwardly shuffle out of the hospital. Damn it! Just what kind of power does Tara hold? Back when she lived with them, she was totally unremarkable. But ever since she cut ties, she has become dazzlingly untouchable. She feels like a complete stranger now.

Jade, in particular, feels a sudden, suffocating wave of panic. Now that Tara is shining so brightly, what if Evan wants her back? They finally got the two of them to break off their engagement. Jade absolutely refuses to let them reconnect. Lately, Evan has been busy with who-knows-what, and his texts to her have been painfully dismissive. Panic clawing at her chest, Jade realizes she needs a new strategy.

Tara stands outside the ICU for a few moments. Just as she turns to leave, Danny approaches, holding two hot coffees.

“Babe…”

She shoots him a warning glare. “Who gave you permission to call me that?”

Danny leans in, dropping his voice to a low, intimate murmur. “Oh? Should I call you Dr. T,

then?”

His warm breath brushes against her ear, sending a rush of heat straight to the tips of her

ears.

“Shut up,” she snaps.

Danny chuckles softly. “So you’re the legendary Dr. T. I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

“Didn’t I literally show up at your door to cure your poison?” she replies, exasperated.

Danny’s gaze darkens as he hands her a coffee. “Must be fate, then. The person I was desperately searching for was right beside me all along.”

Chapter 64

Tara takes the cup. “Save the charm. Fixing you was just a coincidence.”

“But why did it have to be you? And why did it have to be me?” he asks, his voice laced with an undeniable magnetic pull.

The heavy tension makes Tara’s heart skip a beat. She takes a half-step back, forcing a calm expression. “Mr. Calhoun, watch your boundaries.”

“Don’t worry, I know my limits,” he says smoothly.

Just then, Danny’s phone buzzes. He glances at the screen, and a cold, predatory smile touches his lips.

“Not going to answer that?” Tara asks, noticing the shift.

“They probably got the news that Dr. T surfaced, so they’re calling to fish for information,” he says casually.

“What? They? You mean the people who poisoned you?” Her expression instantly sharpens.

Danny mutes the phone, a chilling frost settling in his dark eyes. “Exactly.”

Tara frowns, lowering her voice. “You knew who did it this whole time?”

“I had my suspicions, but no hard proof. But now, the bait has been taken.” He lightly taps the phone against his palm. Leaning in close again, his warm breath sweeping over her skin, he asks, “So, is Dr. T willing to keep protecting her favorite patient?”

A flush creeps up Tara’s neck, and she deliberately hardens her expression. “Mr. Calhoun, please maintain a professional distance.”

Danny chuckles, a rich, rumbling sound. “Alright.”

“I need to check on my aunt’s post-op vitals,” Tara says quickly, practically fleeing the scene

to hide her embarrassment.

Danny watches her walk away, the corner of his mouth curving upward. He looks down at his vibrating phone, his gaze turning icy. “Ready? Let the games begin.
