Chapter 65
The next day, Kellen’s condition improves enough to be transferred out of the ICU. To ensure she gets proper rest, Tara arranges for a private VIP suite.
When Tara walks in, Kellen is already awake. Seeing her niece, she weakly extends a hand. “Tara…”
Tara quickly steps forward and takes it. “How are you feeling, Aunt Kellen?”
“Much better… I’m okay.” Tears well up in Kellen’s eyes. “I’m so proud of you.”
Tara’s eyes prick with tears, and she gently squeezes her hand. “Just focus on resting. Leave everything else to me.”
Kellen gives a feeble nod and soon drifts back to sleep. Tara tucks the blankets around her and quietly slips out of the room.
The Dennis family is as heartless as expected. Knowing they have no leverage left, they haven’t bothered to show their faces today. It is probably for the best; their presence would only disrupt Kellen’s recovery. Their only goal was to use her as a bargaining chip anyway.
Stepping into the hallway, Tara is about to head to the doctor’s office for the latest lab reports when she bumps right into Evan. Dressed in a sharp suit and carrying a bouquet of lilies, he is clearly here for a visit.
Tara stops in her tracks, her eyes instantly freezing over. “What are you doing here?”
Evan looks at her with a complicated expression, his voice low. “I heard Aunt Kellen had surgery. I wanted to see how she’s doing.”
Back when Evan and Tara were together, Kellen had been well aware of their relationship. She had planned to return for their engagement party, but fell ill and had to stay back, which ultimately led to the brain tumor diagnosis. Kellen never really liked Evan; she always felt his affection for Tara wasn’t genuine. But since Tara loved him, she kept her opinions to herself and offered her blessing. When they eventually called off the engagement, Kellen had actually breathed a sigh of relief. She believed Tara deserved much better.
Evan only found out about the hospital stay after Jade accidentally let it slip. Jade had painted a dramatic picture of Tara being reckless, claiming she hired some random doctor for the surgery and that it was a sheer miracle Kellen survived. She had spewed plenty of other garbage, but Evan hadn’t really listened. He just zeroed in on the fact that Kellen was in the hospital, which gave him the perfect excuse to come see Tara and clear the air.
“There’s no need,” Tara says coldly. “She needs peace and quiet right now.”
Evan furrows his brow, a hint of desperation in his tone. “Tara, do we really have to be at each other’s throats like this? Have you forgotten how much we used to love each other?”

Tara lets out a harsh laugh. “Have you forgotten that we broke off the engagement? We have absolutely nothing to do with each other anymore.”
