Chapter 76

Kellen’s warning isn’t without reason. Ever since her illness, her relationship with Charles’ side of the family has essentially shattered. There is no telling what kind of toxic stunts Jade might try to pull.

Facing death has given Aunt Kellen a newfound clarity; she simply doesn’t care about those fake people who are supposed to be her family anymore.

“Don’t worry, Aunt Kellen,” Tara says soothingly. “We can handle ourselves.”

Of course Jade would be there. A desperate social climber like her would never miss a room full of cameras and rich heirs. But if Jade knows what is good for her, she will keep her distance. Otherwise, Tara won’t hesitate to tear her apart.

Saturday night arrives. The Grand Imperial is glowing under the city lights.

Tara and Keira step out of their car and walk into the grand ballroom. The space is a glittering sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and dizzying perfumes. Since this is an event targeted at the younger elite, the dress code is formal but daring-plunging necklines, bold colors, and an overall vibe of rebellious luxury.

The moment Tara walks in, heads turn. Whispers ripple through the crowd as calculating

eyes assess her.

“Tara, look. It’s Jade,” Keira murmurs, discreetly nodding toward the right.

“Ignore her. Let’s go grab a drink,” Tara replies, completely unfazed.

Naturally, Jade spots them immediately. Accompanied by her shadow, Summer, she glides across the marble floor with a perfectly manicured smile.

“Tara! Keira! I am so glad you made it,” Jade coos, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. “I wanted to send you invitations myself, but you know how things have been. It is so wonderful to see you here. I’ll introduce you to some of my friends later.”

This is Jade’s trademark move. Even though they are practically enemies behind closed doors, in public, she plays the role of the loving, gracious sister to absolute perfection.

Tara knows exactly what game her adopted sister is playing. Beneath that sweet facade is a viper waiting to strike.

“No need. We’re just here to look around,” Tara says coolly, taking Keira’s arm to walk away.

Jade’s friend Summer steps into their path, crossing her arms. “This is a charity auction hosted by the elite socialite circle. Even though it’s for a good cause, everyone here is top-tier high society. You should be grateful you even get to step foot in a room like this and see how the real world works.”

Chapter 76

The entire circle knows Tara disappeared for years, supposedly living in some backwater, town. To them, she is a nobody trying to play dress-up, totally out of her depth in a room full of blue bloods.

Keira’s face flushes with anger. “Excuse me?”

Tara squeezes Keira’s hand to calm her, a dangerous smirk playing on her lips. “You know what, Summer? You’re absolutely right. It is a very eye-opening experience.”

Her gaze drops deliberately to Summer’s outrageously low-cut dress. “Especially seeing ho desperate some people are to flash their skin just to get a sliver of attention. The ‘high society’ aesthetic is truly something to behold.”
