The Scorned Heiress: No More Mercy novel Chapter 95

Chapter 95

The two women line up at the starting gate, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.

Luke jogs over to the fence, leaning against the rail next to Danny. “Are they actually doing this?”

“Obviously,” Danny says, his eyes locked onto Tara.

“Aren’t you worried your girl is going to eat dirt?” Luke teases.

“Shut your mouth,” Danny snaps, his voice turning lethal. “She doesn’t lose.”

Luke immediately snaps his mouth shut, throwing his hands up in surrender. If Tara actually crashes, he does not want to be blamed for jinxing it.

The referee raises a flag and drops it. The horses explode out of the gate.

Obsidian, living up to his purebred racing lineage, bolts forward, instantly taking a two-length lead.

Jade throws a smug look over her shoulder, finding Tara calmly settling into a steady rhythm.

Pathetic, Jade thinks, sneering.

Tara leans forward, moving with the wind. She gives Wildfire a sharp command, and the stallion shifts into a terrifyingly fast gear. Within seconds, they close the gap. The two horses run neck and neck, their hooves thundering against the packed dirt.

Then, Tara seamlessly pulls ahead.

Suddenly, a collective gasp rips through the crowd.

Without warning, Wildfire lets out an agonizing shriek and rears violently up on his hind legs, wildly throwing his weight to the side. Tara is instantly unseated, her body slipping dangerously close to the trampling hooves.

Danny’s heart stops. The blood drains from his face, and he grips the fence so hard the wood

groans.

What the hell just happened? The horse is completely panicking. Tara is clinging to the saddle, half her body dragging against the rushing wind.

Luke curses loudly. “Danny, do something! She’s going to get killed!”

Luke might love horses, but his riding skills are garbage. Danny, however, is a former international champion. Just as Danny is about to vault over the fence, Tara uses sheer core strength and the horse’s momentum to violently twist her body upward. With a breathtakingly acrobatic maneuver, she swings her leg back over and crashes into the saddle.

Danny lets out a shaky breath, a cold sweat breaking out across his shoulders.

Chapter 95

Tara immediately throws her weight forward, wrapping her arms around the massive horse’s neck. “Easy, easy. I’ve got you,” she murmurs, her fingers rubbing a soothing rhythm behind his ears. The stallion’s frantic thrashing miraculously slows, though his wide, bloodshot eyes still roll in pain.

Her sharp gaze scans the dirt track. Scattered across the sand are dozens of jagged iron nails.

Realization clicks into place. Her eyes darken with lethal intent.

She had seen Jade toss something onto the track earlier. The maintenance crew sweeps these grounds daily-there is no physical way nails belong on a high-end track. Jade set a trap to paralyze her horse.

The race isn’t over yet. She will deal with the psychotic little brat at the finish line.

Tara presses her lips into a thin, furious line and snaps the reins. “Go!”

Her dark hair whips violently behind her. The track opens up, and Wildfire, realizing his rider is safe, surges forward with explosive speed.

Jade looks back and her smug smile instantly vanishes. Tara not only survives but rapidly closes the distance. It sends her into a blind panic.

“Move!” Jade screams, brutally slashing her crop across Obsidian’s flank.

The horse shrieks and launches into a frantic, reckless sprint. As they approach the final, treacherous curve, Jade deliberately yanks her reins, steering her massive horse directly into Tara’s path to ram her into the fence.

“Watch out, Tara!” Jade cries out in fake terror, while viciously keeping her horse locked on a

collision course.
