Natalie leaned back on the couch, a smile playing on her lips. “I’ll make more tomorrow. If you want to learn, I can teach
you.”
Ryan’s eyes lit up. “Sure.”
After dinner, the group chat for Class 8 of Grade 12 was buzzing with activity.
Logan: [Hey everyone, the SAT results are out. How did you all do?]
Eric: [Don’t even ask. I totally bombed math. I’m seriously questioning my life right now.]
Logar: [Did you guys hear? The top scorer is from our school.]
Abigail: [For real? The one who got 1599, just one point short of a perfect score?]
Eric: [Yeah. I bet it’s Iris. She’s always been number one in our grade, but has she ever scored that high before?]
Logan. [Maybe she just killed it on the SAT. I scored thirty points higher than usual myself.]
Wendy: [Hannah, what did you get? I remember you guessed 620.]
Hannah: [627! Even better than I thought. Natalie, weren’t you talking about going to Redvale University? What’s your score? Don’t tell me you didn’t even make the minimum line.]
Hannah: [Don’t tell me you forgot our dinner bet?]
Abigail: [Hannah, that’s a bit much. She’s still our classmate. Cut her some slack.]
Hannah: [Hey, I’m just being a caring classmate here. Natalie, come out and chat!]
Wendy: [Yeah, you said you wanted to go to Redvale. So, what’s your score?]
Logan: (Guys, chill. We’re all classmates here. Asking about scores is kinda awkward…]
Eric [Exactly, it’s all over now. Let’s just enjoy ourselves.]
Rosie (Enough with the noise! Wendy, you think you did so great, huh?]
Wendy [It wasn’t my bet Why doesn’t she say something herself?|
Natalie was idly swiping on her phone when Rosie sent her a private message
Rose Natalie, don’t worry about it just ignore her ]
Rosie had no clue what Natalie scored, but she figured it couldn’t be that great
Based on Natalie’s usual grades, Redvale University was a total long shot. She probably couldn’t even get into a basic college
Rosie: (Which school are you going to? I’ll go with you |
Natalie: [It’s fine. I’m going to Redvale University |

Rosie saw Natalie’s reply and thought. ‘Redvale University? Seriously?
Well, if the Mitchell family can get her into Redvale, I can just have my uncle pull some strings for me too.
Then we can be slackers together every day.’

ust as Rosie was about to ask Natalie what major she was picking, her phone buzzed with a new message, a photo Natalie ai just posted in the Class 8 group chat.
Rosie clicked on it without thinking.
The photo took a few seconds to load, and then it popped up on her screen.
Name: Natalie]
Total Score: 1599]
Province Rank: 1]

tosie’s hand shook, and her phone nearly slipped out of her grip.
Her eyes went wide as she stared at the score, thinking she must be seeing things.

ihe rubbed her eyes and checked again.

Cosse took a deep breath, then another.
Then she shrieked, “AAAAAAHHHH!!!”
At the same time, the Class 8 group chat was going absolutely wild.
The national SAT top scorer was Natalie, the girl who was always at the bottom of the grade
Who wouldn’t be stunned by that?

Charlotte met her gaze, her tone earnest.
“Matilda raised you and taught you so well. We should go pay our respects.”
William put down his fork too.
“Yeah, let’s all go together. The whole family.”
Andrew nodded.
“We should.”
Ethan pushed up his glasses.
I’ll go prepare some offerings in a bit.”
Natalie glanced at everyone and nodded. “Okay.”

In Seaside City, at Upade Town.
Natalie was driving, with Charlotte and Ryan in the car with her, leading the way up front. Behind them, William and the four brothers followed in their own car.
They drove out of Harbor City, headed toward Seaside City, and after crossing through downtown, the road got bumpier as they headed into the suburbs.
After nearly an hour and a half en the road, the skyscrapers outside the window gave way to farmland and villages, and then those faded into winding mountain roads.
Charlotte stared out the window, her eyes growing misty.
‘Sweetheart, Matilda… did she live here?”
Natalie nodded.
“Yeah, in the town. Grandma grew up here.”
kyan pressed his face to the window, watching the road outside get narrower and narrower, and muttered under his breath.
Man, this place is really out in the middle of nowhere…”
Natalie didn’t say a word, just kept her eyes on the road.
After another hour or so, they took a turn onto an even narrower dirt track
It was obvious this road was a nightmare for cars, rutted and full of potholes, so Natalie had to crawl along at a snail’s pace
