It was the last day of the New Year break, and work resumed the next day. So after Winter went with William back to the hospital, she returned to her apartment at Westbay.

The next morning, she got ready and was just about to head out when she opened the door and saw a large manila envelope on the floor outside.

She looked up and down the hallway, but no one was there.

She didn’t open it right away. Instead, she went back inside, found a stick, and carefully poked at the envelope from every angle. Only after making sure it wasn’t anything dangerous did she crouch down and open it.

Inside was a photo album.

It was the same album Chris had given her the day before, the one Mrs. Xander Sr. used to look through all the

time when she was alive.

She didn’t have to think hard about who had left it there, or on whose orders. She didn’t dwell on it either.

When she escaped from Blackwood Manor, she hadn’t been able to take anything with her. Before starting the fire, she had even hidden the album somewhere out of the way.

And somehow, Chris had still found it.

Winter carried the photo album back inside without a word. She put it in a drawer, then drove to the TV station.

In the editor-in-chief’s office, Sam had been frowning ever since Winter placed her resignation letter on his desk,

and the look hadn’t eased once.

After a long silence, he finally said, “You got pulled from the Eveland foreign correspondent list, and now you want to quit?”

Winter gave a small laugh. “Do I really seem that impulsive to you?”

Leaning back in his chair, Sam turned the resignation letter over in his hands without opening it. He looked genuinely reluctant to accept it.

He knew Winter wasn’t the kind of person who made rash decisions. He just couldn’t understand why she wanted to resign.

She was one of the most promising reporters in the business. She had a bright future ahead of her, and everyone knew how much she loved her work.

After a moment, he asked carefully, “Is this because of your husband’s family? Do they not want you working anymore?”

Until recently, no one at the station knew who Winter’s husband was. But after she went viral online last time, Chris publicly confirmed their marriage. Now everyone knew she was Mrs. Xander.

And in families like that, it wasn’t uncommon for people to expect the wife to stay out of the spotlight.
