“I already have it,” Winter said, giving her phone a little wave. She had already reached out to Wendy’s mother before turning in her resignation and had paid the retainer.

Wendy stared at her. “If you already had her contact, why even bring it up?”

Winter smiled, obviously teasing. “Because I get shy meeting the parents for the first time.”

That night, Winter had cried so hard. She had looked so wronged, so heartbroken.
