At that moment, Skyla was outside painting. She held her brush in one hand and checked the message with the

other.

The second she saw that the person in Chris’s arms was Winter, the brush in her hand snapped clean in two.

With a sharp crack, part of the handle fell to the ground, faintly streaked with blood.

Hearing the noise, the caregiver hurried over. “How did the brush break? Ms. Jasper, are you alright? Oh no, you’re bleeding.”

Skyla glanced at the spot in her palm where the broken end of the brush had pierced her skin. A small bead of blood had surfaced.

She smiled faintly. “It’s nothing.”

She casually pulled out a couple of tissues and wiped the blood away.

That evening, Skyla ate only a little before losing her appetite. She set down her utensils and didn’t take another bite, no matter how much the caregiver tried to persuade her.

After hesitating for a moment, the caregiver said, “Mr. Xander cares so much about your health. For his sake, at least have a little more.”

She didn’t dare sound too certain anymore. Chris hadn’t come to see Skyla in days. He had never visited that often to begin with, but even she could tell this time was different.

Skyla murmured, “Chris cares about me?”

The caregiver nodded. “Of course. Mr. Xander cares about you.”

“Cares about me…” Skyla repeated under her breath.

A few days later, Chris entered the conference room at Xander Corporation and swept a cool glance over the senior executives already seated inside.

They had barely started briefing him on the project when the phone on the table rang.

It was one of the guards from the Westbury villa.

Chris answered. Whatever the guard said on the other end, his voice remained cool and flat. “Has she been taken to the hospital?”

The guard replied, “She’s already on the way.”

Chris gave a quiet hum, hung up, and motioned for the executive across from him to continue.

After the meeting, Gavin followed beside him with a stack of documents in hand. “Skyla had someone call my phone. She says she wants to see you.”

Chris walked into the chairman’s office as the door was opened for him and said indifferently, “Tell them to take good care of her.”

In the hospital room, the caregiver poured Skyla a glass of water and set it by her side.
