Chapter 282
She turned and pressed the call button by the bed.
A moment later, a nurse knocked and came in. “Ms. Jasper, what do you need?”
Skyla’s gaze flicked to the half-open hospital room door. “I want to change, but I can’t reach my clothes. Could you close the door first, then hand them to me?”
The nurse nodded. “Of course.”
She turned to shut the door. One of the bodyguards glanced over, and the nurse quickly explained, “Ms. Jasper is changing.”
The bodyguard said nothing. A second later, the door clicked shut.
The nurse picked up the neatly folded hospital gown from the couch. “Ms. Jasper, do you need help changing?”
As she spoke, she pulled the privacy curtain around the bed.
Skyla smiled gently. “Yes, please. Thank you.”
The bodyguards waited outside for about five minutes before the door finally opened again. Through the small window, they could see Skyla lying in bed, apparently asleep.
A few days earlier, when Winter had been dealing with bad cramps, William had insisted she take time off. He wouldn’t let her go back to work until her period was over and she finally had some color back in her face.
Just before she headed out that morning, William was half-reclining on the couch, still recovering from his injuries, when he said, “Go to work only if you can handle it. If not, call in sick. Got it?”
William still didn’t know she had already turned in her resignation. She barely had any work left, so taking time off was easy. In about ten days, her resignation would probably be finalized.
“All right, I know,” Winter said as she slipped on her shoes. “You should be worrying about yourself. Didn’t Sean tell you to go home and recover? But no, you just had to squeeze into my tiny apartment instead.”
William looked her over. The neckline of her knit dress dipped a little low, and his lips pressed together. “Isn’t that a little too light for this weather?”
“It’s already sixty-eight degrees out. You’re cold?”
She was just about to head out when William called after her. “Come back.”
Thinking something was wrong, Winter turned and walked back over. “What now?”
William pointed at her dress. “Change it. That color doesn’t do you any favors.”
“Really?”
William grabbed a throw pillow and tossed it at the assistant sprawled on the other end of the couch, laughing at videos on his phone. “You tell her. Doesn’t it wash her out?”
