Chapter 286
At lunch, Winter decided to stop keeping it from William.
“I quit,” she told him. “I just have to go in tomorrow to finish the exit paperwork.”
William was in the middle of putting food on her plate. The table was full of all her favorite dishes. At her words, his hand stopped. He looked up at her, his lips pressing into a thin line.
Then his fingers tightened slightly around his fork before he lowered his gaze and went back to eating. “What, are you planning to leave Liono City?”
Winter sighed to herself. William really was her closest friend. He knew her too well.
She had only said she quit, and he had already guessed she was planning to leave the city.
“Yeah,” she said. “I want to start over somewhere else.”
William did not ask any more questions. He only said, “I’ll help you find a good place. I’ll buy the house ahead of time, so when you get there, you can move right in.”
“You don’t have to. I already know where I’m going.”
Something heavy settled in William’s chest. She had already decided on the place. That meant she had been thinking about leaving for a long time.
He didn’t say anything else, and Winter felt a little guilty.
She picked up some food and placed it in his bowl. Then she said patiently, “Don’t be mad. I didn’t mean to keep it from you. I already asked someone to help me look at a place. It has two bedrooms. One for you and one for me.”
William pressed his lips together, but the tension in his face clearly eased. He let out a soft huff. “At least you still have a conscience. You’re not just dumping me and running off.”
Winter didn’t mention Chris, and William didn’t bring him up either. It was as if Chris had become a complete stranger to both of them.
The next day, Winter went to the station to complete her resignation paperwork.
Maybe management had already given instructions, because everything went unusually smoothly.
By the time she finished packing up her things, she could even make it back in time to have lunch with William.
Wendy was out covering a press conference that day and wasn’t in the newsroom, so Winter sent her a message asking if she wanted to get dinner together that night. Wendy quickly replied with a clingy sticker.
Before leaving, Winter stopped by Sam’s office one last time and gave him a hug.
She knew that after she had been assaulted, Sam had called in every favor he could to help her, but he had still been no match for that kind of power.
When she had first been pushed onto the trending charts, station leadership had even held a meeting about firing her. Sam had been the one who fought to keep her and got her a leave of absence instead.
Over the past few years, he really had helped her a lot.
He had been both a mentor and a friend.
