Chapter 287
Winter stared groggily at the line of text on her phone screen. It took her two seconds to process it before she was fully awake.
Roy was downstairs?
She threw off the covers, sat up, and got out of bed. Then she hurried to the window, pulled back the curtain, and looked down.
At that hour, the lights around the apartment complex had already dimmed automatically for the night. They were faint now. A light rain had fallen earlier that evening, and a thin mist still clung to the landscaping below.
She lived on the nineteenth floor, so she couldn’t make out everything clearly. Even so, she recognized Roy’s black SUV at a glance, parked right outside her building.
It was already eleven o’clock. If it had been anyone else, she never would have gone downstairs. She would have worried about running into trouble. But this was Roy. She wasn’t worried at all.
With Roy there, she felt completely safe.
She pulled on her robe, slipped into her shoes, and hurried downstairs.
At that hour, the whole building was quiet. Her footsteps echoed down the hallway, then quickly disappeared into the elevator.
With a soft ding, the elevator doors opened.
Inside the car, Roy watched through the rain-streaked window as Winter stepped out of the elevator in a fluffy robe.
The hood of her red-and-white robe had little fox ears on it, and when she walked out, the ears bounced slightly.
Her hands were tucked into her pockets. She had not brought an umbrella.
The building’s front door slid open automatically. A few strands of rain drifted in and hit her eyes, making her shiver on instinct.
Just as she was about to step back, the space above her suddenly darkened.
A large black umbrella opened over her head.
Roy, dressed all in black, looked cold and distant. One hand, covered in a black glove, held the umbrella handle, angled toward her so that the entire umbrella sheltered her body.
“Roy.” Winter smiled at once, her eyes lighting up. She hunched her neck against the cold and bounced on her toes in place as she looked up at him.
Roy turned slightly and pointed toward the SUV outside, motioning for her to get in.
Winter nodded. “Oh. Okay, okay.”
He opened the passenger door for her, and a wave of heat rushed out from inside the car. Winter let out a relieved sigh and quickly climbed in, stamping her feet a few times on the floorboard.
“I’m freezing to death in this weather.”
