Chapter 297
Steve gripped her chin and tilted her face up, then leaned in to kiss her. Winter used every bit of strength she had left to turn her head away.
“So this is your idea of love?” Winter forced herself to stay calm. She had to keep Steve from losing control.
“We grew up together,” she said. “I never liked you, but that was only because you were always picking on me when we were kids. Even so, I was never truly disappointed in you, because I always believed you still had a chance to turn things around.”
The disappointment in her eyes made Steve’s brow tighten.
He looked at her with a conflicted expression. Her gaze seemed to pierce him, and he had to look away. He released her waist, stood up, walked to the table, poured himself a drink, and tossed it back.
Skyla’s mocking words from that day flashed through his mind.
She had sneered at him for refusing to be a good man, while also lacking the nerve to be truly ruthless. She had said that was why he would never amount to anything.
She was right.
He had been too hesitant. Too softhearted. That was how Winter had ended up at Chris’s side.
As the alcohol started to hit him, he suddenly realized Winter was only saying those things to make him go easy on her. When he had her brought here, Chris’s scandal had still been on her phone screen.
Chris’s reputation was already in ruins, and she was still thinking about him.
After another glass, Steve fixed a dark stare on the woman lying on the bed.
Fine. Then today, he would stop holding back.
She wouldn’t accept him?
He had plenty of ways to make her accept him. To make her depend on him, cater to him, and become unable to leave him.
Winter saw him pick up a small dark brown bottle from the table, and a cold chill ran straight through her chest.
The moment she realized what it might be, she tried to sit up.
But back at the airport lounge, just as she had fought off Steve’s bodyguards and tried to escape, she discovered too late that the people in the lounge had all been planted by him. Someone had attacked her from behind and drugged her.
Now she had no strength left. She could still speak, but that was all.
As Steve walked toward her, he unscrewed the cap of the bottle.
“Winnie, this will make things better for us,” he said. “Don’t be afraid. It won’t hurt you. Just a few drops.”
