Chapter 305
Winter clenched her teeth and snapped, “You’re despicable!”
“Despicable?” The image of her bloodied palm in the car flashed through Chris’s mind.
She had looked at him with cold eyes, refusing to let him touch her even if it killed her. And yet when they got to the hospital, she had been begging for a man.
His voice was cool, but his anger was unmistakable.
“You were the one who broke the deal first.”
The deal?
“It was never a fair deal to begin with. Why should I honor it?”
She still hadn’t fully regained her strength. Just raising her voice made her breathless.
“Before, I thought we were still legally married, and as long as that relationship hadn’t been dissolved, I had no way to get free of you. But the truth is, you lied to me for three years.
“A deal? In what capacity, and with what right, do you get to restrict my freedom?
“You’re a liar, and you still want to talk to me about a deal? What gives you the right?”
Chris replied in a measured voice, heavy with implication, “Our marriage was never part of the deal.”
So now he was playing word games with her?
“Fine. Then your deal with William’s side was that the Zeller family wouldn’t touch Skyla, and you would stop bothering me. If our marriage was never part of the deal, then neither was anyone outside the Zeller family. So what right do you have to stop me from exposing Skyla?”
Every mocking word she threw at him landed like a blade.
“You just want to protect Skyla. Is it really that hard for you to say it?”
At last, Chris’s low voice came through the line, roughened in a way that made it sound almost strained.
“Are you doing this for Mrs. Young, or for William?”
Of course, it was for both Mrs. Young and William,
And for herself too.
But the moment he asked that question, the answer came out before she could stop it.
“As long as I can avenge Mrs. Young, I’ll do whatever it takes,”
Chris bit down on the cigarette between his lips, and a cold smile spread across his mouth.

The car moved steadily down the road. Gavin hadn’t heard what Winter said on the other end, but the temperature inside the car seemed to drop all at once, as if the air itself had frozen.
