Chapter 304
The moment she saw Winter sitting up in the hospital bed, Sasha’s brows drew together. She hurried to the bedside, put a hand on Winter’s shoulder, and started trembling with anger.
“You’ve suffered so much.
“I truly had no idea Steve would do something so monstrous to you. Winnie, I’m sorry. This is my fault. I failed to raise him right.”
Winter could feel Sasha’s fingers shaking without stop. She reached out and held her hand in return.
“Aunt Sasha, this has nothing to do with you.”
“Did he… did he do anything to you?” Sasha asked, heartbroken, as she gently touched Winter’s face.
Winter shook her head.
She vaguely remembered Steve’s hot breath against her face. His lips had almost touched hers. If Roy hadn’t arrived in time, there was no telling what Steve might have done to her.
Everything that happened after that was still blurry, but she knew she had been rescued. She just hadn’t expected Chris to intercept them, and things had almost gone too far between them.
She pulled herself back from the thought. Her eyes fell to the bandage wrapped around her palm, then moved away expressionlessly.
Sasha’s eyes grew redder and redder.
“Now he’s been arrested, and after what he did to you, Chris is never going to let him go. I…”
“Aunt Sasha, even without any other charges, Steve can never come back from what he’s done.”
Winter’s voice was calm.
She knew the truth was cruel, but Sasha needed to understand how serious this was. That was one of the reasons she had agreed to see her.
But Sasha’s response caught her off guard.
In a cold voice, Sasha said, “I failed to discipline him. He brought this on himself. He deserves whatever happens to him.”
Winter froze for a moment.
“For doing something this shameful, even if he gets the death penalty, we’ll accept it. His father and I have already agreed. We’ll not interfere in this matter, and we’ll not let you suffer one bit more because of him. We’ll act as if we never had this son.”
Sasha wiped away her tears, and her emotions gradually settled. But Winter knew no mother could ever truly accept something like this calmly.
Still, she couldn’t think of a single word to comfort her.
Sasha took a breath and unscrewed the lid of the thermos she had brought.
“You had your stomach pumped, so I know your stomach must hurt. Drink some hot soup first. It’ll help warm you up.”
