Chapter 309
The car pulled up in front of Roy’s apartment building.
Zion and Winter took the things they had bought for Roy out of the trunk. Zion carried everything himself and followed behind Winter, who still had her sunglasses on.
“I really think we should let G know first,” Zion said again as he pressed the elevator button. “Ms. Scott, G’s a grown man. What if he answers the door with his shirt off.”
Winter took off her sunglasses. “You’re right. We should let him know first.”
The elevator arrived, and Winter stepped inside. Zion got in beside her.
He kept watching her, only to see that once they got to Roy’s floor, she still hadn’t done anything that looked like giving him a heads–up.
So was she planning to warn him or not?
The doors opened, and they stepped out.
Only when they reached Roy’s door did Winter finally take out her phone and send him a message.
They waited five minutes, and no one came.
A moment later, the elevator behind them arrived. The doors slid open, and Zion looked up at once.
Roy stepped out.
He was dressed in black, wearing a black baseball cap and mask. One hand was on a cane. His right leg was in a cast, and he moved toward them slowly, one difficult step at a time. In his other hand, he carried a grocery bag from the supermarket, swinging lightly at his side.
Winter froze.
“G!” Zion quickly set everything down and hurried over. The moment he got close, he caught the sharp smell of medicated ointment on him and burst out angrily, “That damn Gavin really did a number on you!”
Roy might not have been some big shot with people at his beck and call, but he had never suffered this kind of humiliation before. The way he had looked just now, coming out of the elevator with a grocery bag in hand, had been downright pitiful.
Damn Gavin.
Zion took the grocery bag from Roy and looked him over with concern. “Where else are you hurt?”
Roy shook his head once, then shifted his gaze past Zion to Winter.
Winter hadn’t expected Roy to be hurt this badly either. For a moment, she didn’t know what to say.
She quickly walked over and took hold of the arm that wasn’t using the cane. “You’re hurt this badly, and you still
went grocery shopping? You could’ve just told us, or had something delivered.”
Looking at Roy like this, especially the way he had come out of the elevator alone with that grocery bag in his hand, made her think of how solitary his life had always been.
