Julian froze for a second. Then he said in a heavy voice, “Chris lost his parents when he was still that young. If I used his dead parents to beg him for mercy, what kind of person would that make me?”
The thought had never even crossed his mind.
Steve was his son. Chris was his nephew. Both of them were part of the Xander family. Both of them were his children in his eyes.
He would never wound Chris, an orphaned boy, just to save his own son.
“You’re always like this!” Seeing him like that made Sasha think of the past, and her anger flared. “This is exactly why Steve ended up on this path!”
“Me?” Julian pointed at himself with a trembling hand.
He knew he had failed to discipline Steve properly, and he knew Steve turning out like this was partly his fault. But Sasha’s words hit him like a steel needle straight through the heart.
Her eyes were full of bitter mockery. “Ten years ago, when Chris came back from the military, if you hadn’t agreed to hand the family business back to him, if you had kept a firm grip on it yourself, Steve would never have gone astray chasing the top position in Xander Corporation!
“It was your stupidity, your blind obedience, and your spineless loyalty that ruined him!”
Julian slammed a hand down on the stone table. His face flushed red with anger. “That’s enough!
“The Xander family business was built and expanded through my brother’s hard work. When he died, Chris was still a child, so it was handed to me to manage for him. What was wrong with giving it back to him when the time came?”
He pointed at Sasha. “You’ve been hung up on this all these years. I think it was your influence on Steve that pushed him down this road of no return!”
“Don’t blame your own weakness on someone else!” Sasha snapped. “If you don’t want to do anything for your son, then just say so. Don’t dump all of this on me.”
She turned and walked a few steps, then stopped and looked back at him. Her voice was cold with contempt. Marrying a weak man like you is something I’ll regret for the rest of my life.”
He was Chris’s uncle, yet he didn’t even have the nerve to stand up to him.
A man like that had no backbone at all. If the Xander family hadn’t come with such lavish marriage gifts, and if she hadn’t already lost faith in that other man, she never would have agreed to marry Julian.
