The fighting in the hallway was getting louder by the second.
The thought that Chris had abandoned her sent such a violent wave of emotion through Skyla that even her fingers began to shake. She had to clutch the blanket tightly just to force herself to stay calm.
The most urgent thing now was getting out.
Up until now, she hadn’t only had Chris’s people around her, but her own as well. They had been protecting her since her time overseas. Their identities had been scrubbed so clean that not even Chris had been able to trace
them.
“Bring me the wheelchair.”
Her gaze swept over the caregiver, who had gone pale with fear.
Useless idiot. She had actually dared keep this from her.
The caregiver flinched and stammered, “O–Okay, Ms. Jasper.”
She stumbled toward the wheelchair while Skyla pulled out her phone and called Victor.
“I’m at the Xander family hospital.”
Victor had been jolted awake by the call and was already in a foul mood. The moment he heard her voice, his tone turned cold. “What now? You expect me to come see you?”
A flash of malice crossed her face. “If you don’t want your dirty little secrets getting out, send people to help me. Now.”
That woke him up fast.
Not long ago, he had wanted an introduction to Chris so he could secure a partnership on Xander Corporation’s newest major project. By his estimate, it was a deal worth a fortune and a once–in–a–lifetime opportunity. He had told Skyla to make it happen, but the little bitch had failed him.
He had threatened to destroy her mother’s ashes and grave, and she had threatened him right back with what he had done years ago, including handing her mother over to another man.
If she hadn’t once taken the hit for Chris in that car accident, and if she didn’t still have some value because of that, Victor would have strangled her long ago.
So much for all the flattering rumors. To Chris, she was nothing. She had never brought Victor any real benefit.
She was useless, just like her dead mother.
The mere thought of her mother filled him with humiliation. Those secrets could never be allowed to get out.
