Her face flushed hot with humiliation and anger. What the hell was wrong with him?

She turned her head away, shut her eyes, and kept telling herself over and over that she needed sleep. If she was going to have any strength left, she had to rest.

She didn’t know how much time passed. At some point, she drifted off in a haze, then jerked awake and looked across at Chris on the opposite couch. He hadn’t moved. Only then did she finally let herself sink back into sleep.

The helicopter began a slow descent.

By the time Winter woke again, it was daylight.

All around her was a vast stretch of blue ocean. Out on the endless water, an island came into view.

As the helicopter lowered, the island gradually sharpened into focus.

At first, when she spotted it, she thought it might be the same abandoned island near the border from last time. But this one was nothing like that barren wasteland.

The island was lush with thick green trees. There was a lake at its center, its surface glittering in the sun. Flowers bloomed everywhere, and as the sea breeze swept across the island, it almost seemed to carry their fragrance with

After Skyla returned to Westbury, she tried calling Chris again, but the call still wouldn’t go through.

She had come back the night before. There was no way Chris didn’t know that. And yet he still hadn’t shown up.

Did he not even care that she had almost been hunted down the night before?

The more she thought about it, the less she could stay calm. Where had Chris gone? Did he not know that not seeing him made her panic?

Seeing how tightly wound she was, the caregiver barely dared go near her. She only approached when Skyla directly told her to.

Skyla wouldn’t even eat. She spent the entire day clutching her phone, calling Chris again and again. She also dug up Gavin’s number and tried calling him several times, but those calls wouldn’t go through either.

Then, near evening, she called again.

This time, to her surprise, someone answered.

Before the person on the other end could speak, she said urgently, “Gavin, is Chris with you? Can you put him on? Please? I want to see him. I really want to see him.”
