Chapter 410
A sharp glint flashed through Chris’s eyes. He lifted one brow.
“How good?”
Winter had never been the type to show off using someone else’s name, but the words slipped out before she could stop them.
“Better than you.”
There was a faint, proud little edge in her voice.
It made it hard not to believe that the man she was talking about really was that good.
But Chris didn’t like hearing it.
In her eyes, apparently any man was better than him.
Just as he was about to say something, a rustling sound came from the woods.
Scattered light from the helicopters fell over the area, making their surroundings barely visible.
Chris’s eyes sharpened instantly.
The hand supporting Winter loosened slightly. She slid down from his back, but before she could steady herself, Chris pulled her into his arms.
Her face pressed against his cold chest, blocking her view.
A gunshot rang out.
Chris shielded her as he backed up, until her shoulder touched a tree trunk.
He had taken her behind a tree.
“Are there too many of them, or did the shooter dodge?” Winter asked, staying still and following his lead
Other than those two possibilities, she couldn’t think of any reason Chris would suddenly pull her into
cover.
His cool voice sounded above her. At the same time, his palm pressed against the back of her head in a gesture that felt almost soothing,
“He dodged. It’s Garrett.”
Winter froze.
From the way Chris said it, he clearly already knew about Garrett.
“Who is he?”
“Gavin’s twin brother. He pretended to be Gavin, took Skyla away, then went to the prison and took too.”
So they really were brothers.
Twin brothers.
Winter hadn’t known that was what had happened.
The two men looked far too much alike. Even their voices were almost identical
If she hadn’t trusted Gavin’s loyalty so completely, she might have mistaken Garrett for him too.
If Garrett deliberately pretended to be Gavin, then unless someone trusted Gavin’s loyalty as completely as she did, it would be almost impossible to tell them apart.
