In the woods, Chris held Winter close.
Rain slid down his cheek to his chin, then dripped onto the weatherproof jacket she was wearing.

It matched the beat of her heart.
Chris held the gun in one hand and kept his other hand against the back of her head. His voice was low.
“Scared?”
“Hmm?” Winter looked up at him.
Just then, a drop of rain slipped from his chin and nearly fell onto her face. Chris moved his hand from the back of her head and swept it away with the back of his hand.
“Your heart is beating fast.”
“What would I be scared of?” Winter looked straight into his dark eyes. “That you can’t beat Garrett?”
Chris’s eyes were so dark they seemed bottomless. He clenched his jaw and let out a low, mocking laugh.
That expression made Winter’s mind go blank for a second. Where had she seen that smile before? It felt familiar.
It was a little wicked, but also strangely indulgent.
The moment she realized she was staring at him, she quickly looked away.
Chris suddenly tightened his arm around her. When he heard her breath catch in surprise, a faint laugh slipped from deep in his throat.
It vanished almost instantly, as if it had never happened.
Winter wasn’t sure if she had imagined it.

But the next second, Chris lightly patted the hood over her head.
“Wait here for me.”
