The Scorned Heiress's Hidden Empire (by Jade Quinn) novel Chapter 430

“Why did you drive my parents to their deaths? Tell me, Chris. Tell me!

“They were the people I loved most, and you killed them!”

His face looked as if the rain had washed every trace of color from it. There was a chilling coldness to him. His lips moved.

“They got what they deserved.”

Those five words, utterly devoid of warmth, struck her heart like thunder.

She stumbled back. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. The violent surge of emotion left her unable to breathe. Darkness blurred her vision.

Only the sapphire brooch pinned to her chest still flashed with a brilliant glow.

It was the rare sapphire Chris had won at auction. For half a month, every night after she fell asleep, he had carved and polished it by hand with painstaking care.

The head of the Xander family, a man buried in endless responsibilities, had gone that far for her.

A proposal in a sea of flowers.

How bitterly ironic.

Those two weeks had been nothing but a dream.

The man who had wanted to marry her was the same man who had driven her parents to their deaths.

She removed the brooch and threw it into the crescent–shaped lake without the slightest hesitation. Rain battered her trembling body.

You actually acted like nothing ever happened!

“Chris Xander, you’re terrifying!”

The forgotten fragments of her past spun through her mind like scenes from a broken film.

Every image was filled with despair. Her own heart–wrenching screams seemed to be carried away by the wind, raw, broken, and tasting faintly of blood.

“I will never marry you. Not unless I’m dead.

“Every second I spent with you makes me regret ever knowing you. I should never have met you. I should never have loved you!

“Why didn’t you drive me to my death too?”

It hurt.

It hurt so much.

Winter sank into endless darkness. She could hear herself crying and screaming. The emotions crashing over her were so overwhelming that her entire body went rigid.

Beep.

The monitor beside the hospital bed let out a sharp, piercing alarm.

He and Chris had grown up together. Chris had always been terrifyingly strong. Germs practically had to take a detour around him. He almost never got sick. He had trained under his grandfather since childhood, and his skills were exceptional.
