Chapter 433
Chris walked closer to the bedand picked up the half bowl of oatmeal left on the table.
“Are you all right?” Winter asked.
His hand stiffened around the bowl.
Then, as if nothing had happened, he picked up the spoon and brought a bite to her lips.
“I’m fine.”
“That’s good,” she murmured. It was unclear whether she was speaking to Chris or to herself.
She didn’t eat the oatmeal he offered. Instead, she lifted her eyes to him.
Her eyes were red and swollen, but there was no concern in the way she looked him. There was ofdly hatred, stronger than before.
She suddenly clenched her teeth. Tears rolled down from her reddened eyes, and her suppressed voice came out hoarse and raw.
“I wasn’t worried about you. I just don’t want to owe you anything. Not even a little.”
“You don’t have to feel like you owe me for anything I do.” Chris put the spoon back into the bowl and raised his hand to wipe
the tears from her face.
The moment his fingers touched her cheek, Winter seemed to snap. She slapped his hand away.
“Of course I don’t owe you!”
It was as if the last thread holding them together had snapped.
Chris’s hand was pushed away, but he caught hers instead, his fingers locking around hers.
His dark eyes stayed fixed on hers, sharp and searching. His voice was hoarse.
“What do you mean?”
“We never registered our marriage,” Winter said, her throat tightening as her reddened eyes trembled. “It was because you were afraid I’d remember what happened five years ago. Afraid I’d really kill myself, wasn’t it?”
Five years ago.
Chris’s pupils tightened. His grip on her hand instantly grew stronger.
Images from the island flashed through his mind.
Winter steering the yacht into the stormy sea.
The yacht capsizing.
Her falling into the water.

Something seemed to fracture deep in his eyes. As his breathing tightened, that crack spread little by little.
His voice was strained when he asked, “What did you say?”
Winter looked up at him.
