“Haha…” Winter let out a soft laugh. Her eyes were bright with tears and full of mockery.

“How thoughtful of him. He really did think of everything.”

Gavin looked up at her pale face. She was leaning weakly against the headboard, so thin she seemed almost pas against it, as if she might collapse at any moment.

Unable to keep looking, he lowered his gaze. His fingers curled tightly at his side.

“Was it fun lying to me?” Winter looked at him, a faint, mocking smile tugging at her lips.

“I’m sorry.”

Gavin lowered his head and wiped away the black birthmark near the corner of his eye with the back of his hand.

Only then did Winter notice the faint scar stretching from the corner of his eye toward his temple. That must have been where the fake birthmark had been.

She turned her face toward the sunlight falling beside the bed, but all she felt inside was wave after wave of cold. “Did you come up with the name Roy Toye?”

Gavin looked at her thin profile, his eyes complicated. Then he lowered his lashes.

“Mr. Xander came up with it for me. He guessed you might ask.”

Winter’s eyes reddened even more.

Now that she thought about it, when she had applied for the overseas correspondent post in Eveland, Gavin must have reported it to Chris. Once Chris found out, he had her name removed from the list.

Even the careful, indirect questions Roy had asked about her plans to leave the country hadn’t come from genuine

concern.

They hadn’t been the questions of a friend.

She had been so stupid.

She had trusted Roy so much.

And the man in front of her, the man who had appeared by her side as Roy, had been nothing more than Chris’s informant.

Was she angry?

Winter closed her eyes.

Not really.

She only felt foolish.

Roy’s rescues in the past had not been fake. More than once, she might have died if not for him.
