Over the past few days, Winterhad grown more and more withdrawn.

She couldn’t bring herself to eat. She barely wanted to open her eyes. It felt as if the whole world had drifted far away from her. Until she heard a familiar whimper.

Winter finally opened her eyes and stared blankly at the German shepherd standing beside the bed, nuzzling her fingertips with his nose.

General panted softly and wagged his tail, his eyes bright with excitement as he looked at his owner. He was waiting for her to call his name in that familiar, affectionate voice.

But after waiting for a long time, he still didn’t hear Winter call him “General” the way she used to.

General lowered his head sadly and moved a few steps closer to her hand. He rubbed his head against the back of her hand and let out a hurt little whine.

Mr. White watched anxiously from the side and said to William, “I thought Ms. Winter might feel a little better once General came.”

But now, even General didn’t seem to help.

“Chris told you to bring him?” William asked, frowning as he looked at Winter, who showed no reaction to General’s presence.

Mr. White nodded.

After Winter fell asleep again, William went to Chris’s hospital room, only to find that Chris wasn’t there.

When William turned around, he saw Chris coming out of the elevator.

The moment Chris saw William, his expression changed slightly, and he instinctively quickened his pace.

But William stopped him.

“She’s already asleep,” William said. “I’m here because I need to ask you something else.”

Winter wasn’t actually asleep.

She simply didn’t want to open her eyes and see everyone pretending everything was fine in front of her.

She opened her eyes and sat up. Mr. White quickly supported her arm.

“Why aren’t you sleeping?” he asked.

“I can’t sleep,” she said softly.

Mr. White’s nose stung. Not wanting to make her feel worse, he said gently, “Maybe it’s because you’ve been cooped up in this room for too long. Do you want to go outside for some air?”

Winter lowered her head and pressed a hand to her thigh.

“I don’t think I can walk.”
