His palm rested gently against the side of her face.

“Winnie, just wait a little longer

Chris thought back to the conversation he had with the doctor in the ICU upstairs before William came to find him.

“Mr. Xander, Zac Davis is a match for Richie. Given our current resources and Richie’s condition, we can schedule the transplant for next week.”

Richie’s condition was complicated. His bone marrow disorder had been caused by poisoning, which made his case very different from a standard bone marrow transplant.

The doctor had warned Chris long ago to prepare himself.

Even if the transplant succeeded, there was no guarantee Richie would survive.

They would do everything they could. After that, it would depend on Richie himself.

Just then, the phone in Chris’s pocket vibrated.

It was Richie’s doctor.

The doctor would only call him directly if it had something to do with Richie.

Chris held the phone. With his other hand, he lifted Winter’s hand and kissed it once more before answering and stepping out of the room.

Less than a minute after he left, Winter slowly opened her eyes.

She turned her head and looked at the glass of water on the nightstand.

On the phone, the doctor said, “Mr. Xander, I’ve discussed Richie’s transplant plan with the medical team. I also mentioned my junior colleague to you before. I’ve asked her to come tomorrow. With her here, Richie’s chances will be better.”

The doctor had brought this up before, but the transplant plan hadn’t been finalized then, so the matter had been set aside for the time being.

Chris gave a low hum. “Contact Gavin and have him make the arrangements.”

After hanging up, he suddenly heard something shatter inside the room.

A sharp crash rang out.

Chris’s expression changed. He and William rushed into the room one after the other.

Broken glass lay scattered across the floor beside the bed.

For a moment, his legs nearly gave out beneath him.

Winter was held tightly in Chris’s arms, her face pressed against his chest. Scalding tears poured from her eyes.

Her sobs came in broken, suppressed bursts. Her whole body trembled violently. Then she suddenly struggled with all her strength, trying to break free from him.
