Chapter 458
Only a limited number of people could enter the isolation room at once, so William waited outside.
In the elevator, Chris had told them that Richie was frail and seriously ill. He needed a bone marrow transplant. Fortunately, Zac was a match.
Only then did William realize that, without any of them knowing, Chris had quietly checked their blood during their physical
exams.
In that instant, William finally understood why Chris had shed tears the day he shot Skyla. He also understood what Skyla’s purpose had been.
Everything made sense now.
It had all been for Richie.
The isolation room was beyond several heavy doors. Chris kept an arm around Winter’s shoulders. She could barely walk, yet somehow, she managed to take one step after another toward the deepest part of the ward.
The farther in they went, the quieter it became.
There was no blue sky here. No clouds. No breeze. No grass.
Winter’s trembling fingers clenched tightly. Tears spilled from her reddened eyes again.
Her child had never left this place.
Then, suddenly, Winter heard a child crying.
That cry.
It was her child.
Her tears broke free at once. She pulled away from Chris and stumbled forward, almost running.
But she didn’t know where the sound was coming from. It grew clearer and clearer, yet she still couldn’t find him.
Panicked, she looked around helplessly, as if an invisible wall stood between them.
Then Chris took her hand.
“Winnie, breathe,” he said softly, helping her steady herself.
He held her hand tighter and led her toward a door. His fingers tapped a few times on the screen beside it.
The door opened.
Inside the isolation room, a frail little boy was being held by a nurse. He wore a little onesie with a puppy print, and a cooling patch was stuck to his forehead. He looked uncomfortable, lying weakly in the nurse’s arms as he cried. His eyes were red from
crying.
