One hand supported her, while the other gently protected Richie’s head. Chris looked at her tear-streaked face, and the hand at her waist tightened slightly.
Winter pressed her trembling lips together as tears fell silently. She nodded and let Chris guide her to sit beside Richie’s little bed.
The medical staff quietly stepped aside.
Looking down at the child in her arms, Winter felt her whole heart ache. She wanted to hold him tighter but she was afraid of hurting him or scaring him.
