Chapter 469
Suddenly, Dominic seemed to realize something He lowered his voice and asked, “Wait. Nothing happened between you and this doctor, did it?”
Chris’s gaze was cold. “Nothing happened.
“And it wasn’t a fake marriage. We only took a photo together.”
What he hadn’t expected was that the photo would still be left in the little cabin on the island, and that Winter would end up seeing it.
“Also, it wasn’t a fake marriage. We only staged the registry photo.”
What Chris hadn’t expected was that the printed photo would be left behind in the private vitla on the island, and that Winter would find it.
Dominic drew in a sharp breath. “Now you’re getting technical with me?”
He brushed past that and sat back down on the edge of the bed. The teasing look on his face faded, replaced by rare seriousness.
“Speaking of that, you still haven’t told me why you faked the marriage with Winter in the first place.”
It didn’t make sense.
Chris valued Winter more than his own life. Even after he had erased her memories back then, with the kind of ruthless person he was, the moment Winter said she wanted to marry him, he should have done everything he could to tie her to him legally.
So why use fake paperwork?
“You saw what happened that day,” Chris said, lowering his eyes. The emotion in them was like a bottomless lake, with only the faintest ripple moving beneath the surface. “You saw how much pain she was in when she remembered.”
He raised a hand and pinched the bridge of his nose.
After a long silence, he said quietly, “What else was I supposed to do?”
Dominic thought back to Winter’s breakdown that day. For a moment, he couldn’t tell whether Chris was answering him or trying to convince himself.
Before Dominic could say anything, he shifted and accidentally knocked over the stack of documents on Chris’s bed,
The papers scattered across the floor.
Dominic had no idea how to respond to Chris’s grief, so he simply bent down and started picking them up
The weather was getting warmer, and he was wearing only a thin button-down shirt. As he reached for the papers, his cuft sind up slightly, revealing gauze wrapped around his forearm.
Chris noticed it at once.
Only after Dominic had gathered the papers and placed them back on the table did Chris ask, his voice flat, “How did you get
hurt?”
Dominic followed his gaze and looked down Then he casually adjusted his sleeve and cumled his lips
