Chapter 101

They disappear through the doorway so quickly that it feels suspicious, as if a storm is about to sweep through the dining
room.
I frown slightly.
“You took your time finding the dining room, my love,” Sonia says casually.
“He wasn’t gone for more than two minutes!” Silas grumbles from the head of the table.
She doesn’t even bother looking at him. An amused smile curves her lips.
“I wasn’t talking to Bastian, busybody. I was talking to my partner.”
The silence that follows lasts only a second.
Magnus lets out a quiet chuckle, clearly entertained by his father’s expression as everyone’s attention shifts to the newcomer.
The man walks over to Sonia with the easy confidence of someone who unquestionably belongs in this family. He leans down to kiss her on the lips with the effortless familiarity of a gesture repeated hundreds of times before, then takes one of the two empty chairs between her and Silas.
I blink several times.
I’m fairly certain I just saw what I think I saw.
“Your what?” Silas asks, sounding equally offended and irritated.
“My partner.” Sonia repeats calmly, as though there were nothing unusual about it.
Before I can process that, another man walks into the dining room. He’s only a few years older than the first, with light hair and an easygoing smile that seems completely immune to the tension settling over the room. He heads straight for the table and stops beside the last empty chair, patiently waiting.
I don’t understand a thing.
My gaze shifts from the first man to the second, then back to Sonia.
She simply looks up at him.
“You can sit down, sweetheart.”
The stranger smiles, walks around the table, and sits on her other side just as naturally as the first man had. Then, just like the other, he kisses her too.
I can’t help parting my lips in surprise.
“And… him?” Silas asks again.
Sonia gives him the most innocent smile imaginable.
“Him too.”
The silence that follows is so thick it could be cut with a knife. Bastian clears his throat awkwardly.
Magnus isn’t even trying to hide his laughter anymore.

Silas, on the other hand, lets out a weary sigh and turns his attention back to his cup of coffee.

I’m beginning to suspect the Thorn family is far more unusual than I’d imagined. Sonia, the former queen, Magnus’s mother, and Bastian’s grandmother, has two partners. The most surprising part is that neither of them seems uncomfortable with it. Quite the opposite. Both men look at her with a tenderness that’s impossible to fake, attentive to her every move. while Silas sits alone at the opposite end of the table.
Now I understand why there were two empty chairs between them.
It wasn’t simply about space,
It was a distance built over centuries.
“And this is exactly why I always forget to give my partner the ring. Something is always happening to distract us from what we’re actually supposed to be doing.”
Bastian walks over to where I’m sitting and, to my surprise, kneels in front of me without caring that his entire family is watching. He carefully opens the small velvet box, revealing a white gold ring resting against the soft black lining. The blue diamond catches the sunlight pouring through the enormous dining room windows, scattering tiny flashes of light across his face and over my trembling hand.
“This ring belonged to my mother, and before her, to my grandmother. It has been passed down from generation to generation through the women of my family, and now I want you to be the one who keeps it. I love you, Celine Miller. In this life, and in every life we’re meant to live.”
His voice is quiet, sincere, completely different from that of the prince who can command a room with nothing more than a glance. With a gentleness that makes my heart pound against my chest, he takes my left hand and slips the ring onto my ring finger.
It fits perfectly.
As though it had been waiting its entire existence for this moment.
I look up and find smiles all around the table. Magnus watches his son with undisguised pride. Sonia is smiling too, her eyes glistening ever so slightly, while the two men beside her admire the ring with obvious approval.
Only one person doesn’t seem to share in the happiness.
Silas remains perfectly still, his jaw tight and his eyes locked on the ring. There’s something in his expression I can’t quite decipher. It isn’t anger.
It isn’t sadness either.
It’s a discomfort so profound that it’s almost painful to witness.
“That’s how it’s done, son.” Magnus gives Bastian a couple of pats on the shoulder before returning to his seat.
