Chapter 110
I walk over to the bench where I left Erebus. The moment my fingers brush the sword’s hilt, Jared takes a step back and raises an eyebrow in obvious disbelief.
“Are you trying to kill me, Celine? Grab a regular sword!”
He shakes his head while casually twirling the blade in his hand.
“I may be stronger now, but I’m not immortal, and I definitely don’t have superhuman strength.”
I can’t help smiling.
He’s right.
To everyone else, Erebus isn’t an ordinary sword. It’s heavy, unwieldy, and practically impossible to wield. The only reason I can lift it so easily is because she chose me.
“Coward.”
“Call it whatever you want. I’m still not ready to die, especially if that cursed thing decides to cut me in half.”
He walks over to the weapon rack and, after looking through several blades, picks one out for me before holding it in my direction.
“So you already know about Erebus, huh?”
I smile as I set my sword back against the dresser and take the one Jared offers me instead. The balance changes. immediately. It’s much lighter, and I can feel the difference from the very first moment.
“It’s… a special sword.”
“Yeah, and I’m not the only one who knows it. In fact, every soldier, every royal guard, and every warrior stationed at the castle talks about it… and about you.”
A proud smile spreads across his face before he continues.
“The sword that chose the future queen.” He continues the gossip. “That’s the rumor going around the entire castle. Some people say it’s nothing more than an old legend and that anyone could lift it if they really tried. But the older veterans laugh every time they hear that. They swear it weighs more than a car and that not a single warrior has managed to move it even an inch since it first appeared.”
I can’t help glancing over at Erebus.
Even resting against the dresser, she commands respect.
“Want to find out for yourself?” I ask, nodding toward the sword.
Jared follows my gaze and studies it silently for a few moments.
“I could… but not to prove the story’s a lie. I just want to see how far my strength really goes.”
An amused smile crosses my lips.
“Then go ahead… be my guest.”
Jared arches an eyebrow, but eventually walks over to the sword, wraps his fingers around the hilt…
And a second later. I burst out laughing.
In your he
Jared and I are interrupted halfway through our training when Alaric walks into the training hall looking anything but pleased.
“Alaric, is something wrong?”
I wipe the sweat from my face and unscrew my water bottle as I walk over to him.
“You have visitors.”
The only person who’s away from the castle is my uncle, and I saw him weeks ago, so I have no idea who if could be.
“Who is it?” I ask when I notice him glance at Jared before looking back at me. “And why do you look like that?”
“Because it’s your stepmother and your stepsister.”
Jared walks over and stops beside me, frowning.
“They’re here? At the castle?”
