Chapter 111
All the excitement vanishes in an instant.
My hands remain still over his as I hold his gaze, unable to find the right words.
“I understand…”
Alaric’s green eyes never leave mine.
“No, Celine. You don’t. There’s no way she’s the woman I want beside me for the rest of my life, you know But my wolf won’t listen to reason. He wants her… and right now we’re fighting for control of my body.”
I tighten my grip on his hands, trying to offer him some measure of comfort.
“Have you seen each other yet? Are you going to reject her?”
My stepsister, Anne, isn’t a good person.
Least of all for someone like Alaric.
He’s honorable, patient, and far too kind to end up bound to a woman capable of destroying everything she touches.
Anne never felt remorse for the pain she caused. She enjoyed humiliating, manipulating, and trampling anyone who crossed her path, even her own family.
No.
Someone like her doesn’t deserve a man like Alaric.
The truth is, Anne isn’t good for anyone.
“She hasn’t seen me yet, but I saw her the moment I caught her scent. And I’m sure she sensed I was nearby too. She’s evil, Celine. I know what she did to you, and I also know that a few months ago she agreed to bond with Alpha Tanner Blackwood just so she could become the Luna of a pack.” He tilts his head back, staring at the hallway ceiling before letting out a long sigh. “She didn’t care that you were that wolf’s mate. The only thing she wanted was power… and I’m the future Royal Beta. Can you imagine?”
I nod without saying another word.
I understand.
She isn’t worthy.
She’s simply ambitious.
“Whatever you decide to do, remember that I’m with you, Alaric.”
“I know.” He gives my hands one last squeeze. “I’ll see you later, all right? If you need anything, Jack will cover for Thomas until he gets back from his leave.”
He starts toward his room, but I reach out and catch his hand before he can walk away.
Without thinking, I pull him into a hug.
At first, it catches him completely off guard. I can even feel his body stiffen for a brief moment.
But I know he needs this hug just as much as I need to give it to him.
Little by little, his arms come around me with the same quiet strength.
“Bastian is a lucky man. The Goddess blessed him with a good woman…”
His voice falters.
“…Me, on the other hand…”
“You’ll have a second chance too.” I smile even though he can’t see it. “I did, Alaric.”
We pull apart, and he offers me a smile that never quite reaches his eyes.
“I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me. But right now… I need to get out of this castle.”
I let go of him completely and nod.
I know Anne.
I know how she thinks, and I know exactly what she’ll try to do now that she’s found her mate…
Especially when that mate happens to be inside this castle.
I’m truly sorry for what I’m about to do.
“All right. Take all the time you need. Just let Bastian know where you’re going so he doesn’t start looking for you.”
“He already knows.” He nods toward the staircase. “Now go downstairs and meet your… family.”
