Aymara and I walk downstairs side by side, while an emptiness settles heavily in my chest.

My footsteps echo across the polished marble in perfect rhythm with hers, and for a moment I can’t help thinking how different my life might have been if one of my siblings had ever walked beside me like this.

Once, I wished I had what she has with Alaric. That quiet understanding, that trust that doesn’t need words, that certainty of knowing that, no matter what happens, there will always be someone willing to catch you when you fall.

I dreamed of having something like that with my own siblings too.

Not anymore.

Not after everything they both put me through.

Not after every insult, every punishment, and every time they chose to look the other way while I was being destroyed.

“Are you okay?” my friend whispers as we’re about to reach the last few steps.

“I’m fine. Don’t worry.”

Aymara glances at me out of the corner of her eye. She doesn’t seem to believe a single word I just said.

I follow her gaze and immediately understand what caught her attention.

My shoulders are stiff.

My hands are clenched into fists at my sides.

I exhale slowly, forcing myself to relax every muscle. I loosen my fingers one by one until I feel the tension leave my hands, and finally I offer her a small smile.

It isn’t a smile born of happiness.

Or excitement.

Much less from the pleasure of seeing those women again.

It’s simply my way of telling her that I’m okay… or at least that I can endure this.

The massive doors to the great hall open the moment we approach.

The soft creak of the hinges breaks the silence, and the guards stationed on either side lower their heads in respectful bows. Beyond them, the servants stop what they’re doing and lower their eyes the moment I cross the threshold.

It still feels strange.

For so many years, I was invisible to everyone.

Now every person who works in this castle welcomes me as their future queen.
