Chapter 120
There is nothing left between us anymore, and for the first time since I met her, I can answer her as Alaric Victorius alone. not as a man bound by a connection imposed by the Goddess.
“I’m already an incredibly happy man, Anne. Can’t you see that? I have the honor of serving the kingdom I love, a family that stands behind me unconditionally, a king I trust, friends I’d give my life for, a home, land of my own, and a sister who would die for me without hesitating for a second. I never needed wealth to be happy, because a man’s greatest fortune is the people who remain at his side when everything else falls apart. And you? When I look at you, all I see is bitterness, arrogance, and an ambition that has ended up consuming you.” I don’t stop there, letting everything I’ve been holding inside spill out. “Your father and your brother sent their wife and daughter to beg to avoid exile because they have no one left willing to take them in. You’re not crying because you’ve lost me. You’re crying because with me you’ve also lost the life you dreamed of having. I won’t be the unhappy one, Anne. Love will come when it’s meant to come, and I have no intention of rushing it. If the Moon Goddess chooses to grant me a second chance, I’ll accept it with gratitude. And if She doesn’t, I’ll keep living with the peace of mind that comes from knowing I acted according to my conscience. Remember this: the Goddess sees our actions long before She hears our words. Despite everything you’ve said to me, I truly do hope you find happiness someday.”
Anne doesn’t answer.
She simply turns around and leaves the room the same way she entered it. Her steps are unsteady, and her legs are still trembling, but she doesn’t allow anyone to support her. She holds on to her pride until the very last moment, even when she has absolutely nothing left to cling to.
I remain seated for several minutes, my eyes fixed on the door through which she just disappeared. The silence weighs heavily on my shoulders, and the emptiness left behind by our broken bond still presses against my chest. I know the pain will fade with time, but I also know I’ll never forget this day. Rejecting the woman the Goddess had chosen for me wasn’t how I imagined I’d find love. I close my eyes for a moment and let out a slow sigh.
I only hope the Goddess understands why I made this decision… and that, when the time comes, She’ll forgive me if I was wrong. Because, painful as it is to admit, I’m still convinced I did the right thing.
Bastian pulls me against his body as we walk away from the hall. He doesn’t say a word, because we both know I need this moment of silence. He probably thinks I’m devastated, that I’m building a wall around myself to keep my emotions hidden, but the truth is completely different.
I’m fine.
I’m at peace.
I’m happy with the people standing beside me and with the family I chose, the one that showed me through actions what it truly means to love someone.
Anne and Beatriz never held a real place in my life or in my heart. There was a time when I tried to get close to them, when I desperately searched for a sign of affection, a kind word, a gesture that would make me feel like I was more than just a servant in that house. But there came a point when I understood that love can’t be begged for and that you can’t force someone to love you.
The day I stopped trying. I also stopped expecting anything from them.
Even so, their final words keep echoing in my mind.
My father.
My brother.
Darius’s illness.
