Chapter 121
When we walk through the castle gates, the Millers are nowhere in sight. Bastian leads me down to the underground garage and takes one of the keys hanging from a board mounted on the wall.
One of my eyebrows arches when I realize what he’s just started isn’t a car.
It’s a motorcycle.
Now I understand why he insisted so much that I change into something warmer and more comfortable.
“We’ll get there faster this way.” He smiles as he hands me a helmet.
I take it and put it on without taking my eyes off the machine.
I’ve never ridden one of those things before, and if I’m being completely honest, it scares me a little.
“Are you trying to kill me?”
“Never, sweetheart.” His smile widens as he settles onto the seat. “Just get on. Do you trust me?”
“With my life, Bastian, but on this thing…” I waste no more time and climb onto the motorcycle, wrapping my arms tightly around him as I try to convince myself this isn’t an absurd way to travel. “Let’s go, or we’ll lose them.”
Bastian twists the throttle, and the roar of the engine shatters the silence of the garage. The vibration of the motorcycle runs through my legs, and I can feel the power humming beneath me. I’m not going to lie, at first I’m terrified. I’ve never been on anything like this before, and part of me keeps wondering whether my mate is really taking me to find my family or if he decided to kill me before the Mating Ceremony.
“We’ll find them. Don’t worry about that.”
We ride down the gravel driveway and through the castle’s towering wrought-iron gates. I close my eyes when Bastian accelerates, clinging to him even tighter, but little by little I begin to relax when Astra tells me to.
And she’s right about one thing. If I stay as stiff as a board, Bastian has to work twice as hard to compensate for my weight and my movements. The motorcycle responds to every shift of my body, so when I feel it lean to the right or left, I stop fighting the motion and learn to move with it instead.
I trust him.
I always have.
A few minutes later, we spot the castle car stopped at a traffic light and follow it from a safe distance. We cross the city until we finally reach a middle-class neighborhood, very different from the place where we live.
We stop several yards short of the house so they won’t realize we’re following them. We watch Anne and Beatriz step out after the driver opens the door for them. They don’t even thank him, though I wasn’t expecting anything different.
What catches my attention is the house.
The windows remain dark until they walk inside.
Only then do the lights come on.
I climb off the motorcycle beside Bastian, and we hurry toward the house. It’s small, has no yard, and shows obvious signs of neglect. It looks nothing like the kind of place they believe they deserve, but I suppose they’re finally living with the consequences of their own choices.
“Wait here.” Bastian looks at me before walking toward the house.
i nod and watch him go inside.
The driver is still parked in front of the house, and without giving it much thought, I walk over to the car before he has the chance to get out and open the door for me.
“Good afternoon, Moon Celine.”
“Good afternoon, Rufus.” I greet him without taking my eyes off the house.
Bastian went inside only a few seconds ago, but time seems to stand still. With every passing minute, the pressure in my chest grows heavier. I don’t know what he found in there, but his silence is beginning to worry me.
Five minutes later, I step away from the car, the driver silently following beside me.
“Bastian, I’m coming in.”
