“Idunn is afraid of thunderstorms. I’m sure she’s climbing into Edgard’s bed right now. I also know he’ll scold her for waking him up, but in the end he’ll make room for her and hold her until she falls asleep again.”
A faint smile appears on Darien’s lips.
“He’s a wonderful boy. And a good brother. I’m sure they’re both fine.”
I smile without taking my eyes off the storm outside.
Ever since we moved here, to the edge of the pack’s territory, I haven’t slept under the same roof as my children or my other two mates. It still feels strange.
Uncomfortable.
Going from one house to another is exhausting.
But Darien never agreed to share the same roof with them.
“He is… and he’ll be just as wonderful with his little brother.”
I place my hands over his and lift my gaze just enough to find his reflection in the window as the rain begins pounding against the glass with increasing force.
“Aren’t you going to tell me what you talked about with Chris and Ciro?”
“Just men’s business, love. Don’t worry or upset yourself. The three of us parted on good terms. The only thing that’s changing is that you’ll spend two or three nights a week here with me. If you want, you can bring the children. Their rooms are already prepared. Just a few finishing touches are left.”
I slowly shake my head.
“You know they can’t be separated from their fathers.”
“Just be patient. You’ll get used to it eventually.”
It’s very easy for him to say that.
He went from being a Strigoi with a conscience, to dying as a human by my own hand, and finally being reborn as a hybrid.
Half wolf.
Half vampire.
He adapted to the changes in his body with a speed that still amazes me.
To his new nature.
To his new life.
I didn’t.
No matter how hard I try, I still feel divided. As though part of me remained in the house where Chris, Ciro, and our children live, while the rest of me is trying to build a life here with Darien.
Neither place ever feels completely like home.
