The silver dagger slips from my fingers when the metal burns my skin, hitting the floor with a sharp metallic clang. Pain shoots through my palm, but I barely notice it. Everything else disappears the moment I look up and see Celine lying on the bed beside my son. Blood has soaked through the sheets beneath her body, spilling over the edge of the mattress and dripping onto the floor. Her face is so pale that, for a moment, I fear I’m already too late. Her eyelids close, and her body goes completely still.

“I need help in here. Bring every witch in your kingdom to assist me,” says the warlock who arrived with her just a few minutes ago.

“There are no witches here. Only wolves live in Lemuria.”

His gray eyes flash with an unnatural gleam. He clenches his jaw, abruptly straightens up, and runs both hands through his hair in a gesture of pure frustration while scanning the room, as if searching for a solution that simply doesn’t exist.

“I need towels, hot water, the demon, and the fairy. They’re the only ones with magic who can help me right now, at least long enough to stabilize her so I can go to Avalon for help.”

My entire body tenses at the mention of that world. The old legends claim it is inhabited only by vampires, our mortal enemies, creatures the elders used to speak about in hushed voices around the fire. Yet the moment I look back at Celine, every trace of doubt vanishes. Her skin loses more color with every passing second, and dark veins spread around the wound like black roots crawling beneath her flesh. My son’s future is already uncertain. I can’t lose my grandchild too.

“What about the baby?”

“Right now, I want to save the mother, sir. Go get them.”

The doors burst open with a force that shakes the room. Alaric, Jared, and Thomas rush in almost simultaneously, but the horror before them freezes them the instant they cross the threshold. Their eyes lock onto the bed, the blood, and Celine’s lifeless body.

“Celine!”

Jared is the first to recover. He closes the distance in a hurry and stops beside the warlock, his chest rising and falling with ragged breaths.

“What do you need me to do? Ask for anything. I’ll get you whatever you need.”

The warlock doesn’t even look at him. A bluish light blooms from his hands, wrapping around his fingers before pouring into the open wound. The energy pulses with unstable intensity as he holds his breath, unable to tear his eyes away from Celine.

“Please… please work.”

The warlock pulls his hands away. The blue glow surrounding the wound slowly fades, and the dark veins creeping around the gash retreat for a single second, as though they had been forced back. The hope lasts no more than a heartbeat. They spread beneath Celine’s skin again with a slow, sickening crawl, darkening her flesh more and more while she remains motionless on the bed.

The warlock grits his teeth.

“Bring Morthem and Zharzel! Now!”

Desperation finally shatters the composure he has struggled to maintain since the moment he arrived.

Without wasting another second, I motion to Thomas and Alaric to get Nadia’s body out of here once and for all. I never want to see her again. Not her face. Not a single strand of her hair. If I could, I would rip her from death’s grasp just to kill her with my own hands and make her feel even a fraction of the pain she has caused.

Thomas and Alaric approach the body without a word. Each grabs one of her arms, and they begin dragging her out of the room. Her dress bunches beneath her as it leaves a faint trail of blood across the stone floor. Her head strikes one of the floor’s seams with a sickening thud that turns my stomach, but neither of them

stops.

Within seconds, the body disappears through the doorway.

My attention returns to the warlock.

He’s breathing faster and faster. His hands tremble as he struggles to think of a solution. His eyes dart around the room, searching for something… anything that might keep Celine from slipping through his fingers.

Then it happens.

A light so brilliant that it forces me to squint erupts in the middle of the chamber. The air vibrates violently, and an icy current sweeps through the room, raising goosebumps across my skin. For a brief instant, the radiance engulfs every corner of the bedroom.

A few seconds later, the glow begins to fade, and the silhouette of a man materializes in front of us. He didn’t come through the door or climb in through a window. He simply appears in the middle of the room, as though he had stepped out of the light itself. Without wasting a single second, he runs straight toward Celine.

The warlock stares at him with the same shock I feel. His features harden, unable to conceal the bewilderment caused by the man’s sudden appearance.

“I’m here, sweetheart.”

Jared and I exchange a look of complete confusion.

I don’t recognize him. I’ve never seen him in this castle before, but the way he just appeared can mean only one thing. He came through a portal. Whoever he is, he commands a kind of magic that only a handful

possess.

“How did you find us?” the warlock asks.
