Chapter 17
His eyes slowly turn gold when he looks at me and the warmth immediately returns to the inside of the vehicle
“I’m sorry.”
The apology comes autoitratically.
I’m still not used to someone caring when something affects me.
“Better tell me how I’m supposed to behave when we enter the castle.” I try to distract him while watching the enormous illuminated buildings through the window. “I don’t have the slightest idea what I’m supposed to do.”
Bastian leaves the cigarette in the ashtray and grips the steering wheel firmly again.
“You’ll enter with me and take my arm.” His tone becomes calm again, though I can still sense the tension in him. “You’ll look ahead. Not at anyone specifically, just at the throne and my father.”
I slowly nod while listening.
“The guests who are part of the court are pureblood Lycan nobles who have spent generations benefiting from my family.” The coldness in his voice returns slightly. “They’ll smile, say pleasant things, and pretend to be charming, but don’t believe anything they say. They lie constantly. They’re parasites.”
That frightens me even more.
Not because of what they might say about me, but because of what they’ll think of him for standing beside a she-wolf so weak and beneath his rank.
“What is your father like?”
Bastian lets out a small dry laugh.
“I can only describe him with one word. Insufferable.”
I can’t help laughing a little.
I hope he’s not as severe as Bastian… or that he at least won’t want to throw me out the moment he sees me.
“The first thing they’ll notice is that I still haven’t marked you and that is exactly why I didn’t want any of this.” His jaw tightens again while keeping his eyes fixed ahead. “That will be what makes me want to rip their heads off.”
The cigarette smoke slowly disappears through the slightly open window while the illuminated city continues passing before us.
“There will be many wolves there, Celine. Many.” His voice lowers, becoming deeper. “And all of them will see a she-wolf without a mark. A male’s instinct works that way. They won’t care whose mate you are, they’ll only see a beautiful she-wolf without my scent on your skin and without my mark on your neck.”
The natural way he speaks about it sends a small shiver down my spine.
“Do you think some wolf would try to cross the line with me, Bastian?” The question leaves my lips as barely more than a whisper.
I don’t want to become a problem for him.
The enormous avenues were left behind long ago and now we move slowly through streets surrounded by huge illuminated mansions. Children dressed completely in white run through the gardens while adults smile and wave as our convoy of

vehicles passes by.
Some people even leave white flowers along the edges of the streets.
It doesn’t escape my notice that everyone is dressed in white.
And we are dressed completely in black.
“No.” This time he smiles in a dangerously calm way. “No wolf is that stupid or that suicidal.”
His fingers tap softly against the steering wheel while he slows slightly to take a curve.
“No one will cross that line unless they want me to decorate the kingdom with the red of their blood or with their intestines instead.”
I swallow hard.
He is not exaggerating.
He isn’t even trying to soften what he is.
“You are mine.” He continues with complete naturalness. “That is both a blessing for the kingdom and a threat. Because if I was already a figure of terror and respect before finding you, now I’ll be much worse.”
